Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on
Seriously? That will be appealing to nobody. The only people who would buy this would be the ones who know exactly what they are in for. The cover might catch someone's eye only by how remarkably boring and simple it is.

I personally like the Christmas Tale cover much, much more than the previous one. But it's still really boring.

Once you remove the beveled slipcover, you see that those blurry lights in the picture are actually blurred LED lights in the packagingCSM126 wrote:...and then when we actually get it in our hands it'll be a foil digi that opens like a Christmas present and we'll all be like "Ohhhh".

Out-of-focus Christmas lights? For real? Why not just some Santa Claus and Rudolph clip art, with the letters striped like candy canes? At least they've seemed to move up from J.C. Penney Christmas catalog cover to Neiman-Marcus Christmas catalog cover.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on
Hmm, this gets a big '?' from me. It's not so much a bad cover artistically, I guess (even though, as noted, it's very, very generic), but from an economic viewpoint, from the companies' perspective, are they trying to not sell copies? That's a rhetorical question, obviously, but the cover would lead to speculation, to be sure — the cover is one that, when browsing through a DVD retail store, one would very likely skip over if they hadn't heard of the movie before; there is nothing to draw the eye in on the cover. Last Year at Marienbad's cover takes a minimalist approach (and with the raised lettering, it's very aesthetically appealing judging from the online images I've seen) and Breathless fits the aesthetic of Godard's intertitles and, of course, a newspaper which is precisely the iconic object of the corresponding movie. This contradicts Criterion's current supposed business method of attempting to gain more profits by selling more current movies: it won't sell as much as the previous cover. What's going on here, Criterion?

Ya know, that may very well be what's in store for this title...CSM126 wrote:...and then when we actually get it in our hands it'll be a foil digi that opens like a Christmas present and we'll all be like "Ohhhh".

I've never seen a DVD cover tell me so little about the film. Might as well be the artwork for Eyes Wide Shut.

Haha, as funny as Mystery Train and Hunger getting announced four or five times (on this forum) as upcoming releases.CSM126 wrote:And we've been talking about it for two pages. Thanks for paying attention!

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on
That's the first thing I thought of when I saw it. At least The Ice Storm cover sorta-kinda catches your attention. The Christmas Tale cover just looks like a generic Christmas card from the dollar store. This and Downhill Racer (look, the racer and the text are going downhill!) have got to be two of the laziest covers in recent Criterion memory. I would rather have a visual atrocity like Fanfan la Tulip than these bores.Jean-Luc Garbo wrote:Ugh, the cover rips off The Ice Storm - another bad cover.
While I'm not a huge fan of the Amarcord or Thief of Bagdad covers, I think that style might have worked for all of the characters in A Christmas Tale.

I actually like the original Criterion cover of Amarcord much better than the newer one.
