Indeed! It's wonderful that these two rare 1950s Hollywood dramas are being released on blu-ray. I haven't seen No Down Payment, but I've wanted to for years. I have seen Blue Denim a couple times and it's an excellent '50s teen drama with beautiful cinematography and a powerful Bernard Herrmann score.

Also, I adore Model Shop and I'm very happy it's getting a blu-ray release.

No Down Payment is, in my opinion, the key film exploration of the post-war 50s American middle class malaise. Tony Randall is especially great (in an inspired casting choice) as a pathetic salesman

I can almost never justify Twilight Time prices, but those two films are excellent choices that deserve to be pulled from obscurity. They’re doing some real exciting releases as of late.

Anyone else received their disc of Husbands and Wives? I received mine yesterday and the image is, to me... very disappointing. It's dark and very red. With a lot of fiddling with my TV settings (contrast down, brightness up, saturation [color] down a bit, color shifted toward green/away from red 5 points or so) I can get an ok/acceptable image, but I'm still a bit surprised.

With those adjustments to my TV, outdoor or well-lit scenes look fine. The extra resolution/detail versus DVD is great. But much of the movie takes places indoors at night in dim light, and some scenes really push the amount of light (for instance, the Liam Neeson/Judy Davis lovemaking scene). In those scenes, on my (plasma) TV, the blacks lose all detail and even have a kind of "electronic" look to my eye that makes the black areas seem to "float" in front of other colors. I've never seen this effect before with any disc, and I've got scores of them. (Which makes me think, I should look at some of the opening scenes of the Godfather and compare...)

I compared to my old DVD of H&W and the DVD is clearly boosted. It's much brighter. But there is at least some detail in the dark areas. For instance, in the "interview" sections Judy Davis' dark red hair still has detail on the DVD, while on this new blu ray, large areas of her hair fall off to pure black. It's a little distracting.

I have 10 or 12 other Twilight Time releases and have never noticed this before. Bananas looks great, Crimes and Misdemeanors looks great, (which also makes me think, I should look at Purple Rose of Cairo again; that has many dark scenes... ETA: following up, looked at Purple Rose and it looks excellent)... I remember that in the theater H&W was darkish, but I don't remember it being this dark, and I have no other disc in my collection which requires such adjustment to the TV to look acceptable. A bit odd...

TT may not even have three year rights anymore: Mill Creek is releasing the Valachi Papers, which only came out from TT a few months ago! (And the set also includes two other TT releases, for half the MSRP of one TT film)

All the Woody Allen MGM titles are from old HD masters. Some are better than others (the B&W ones always seemed slightly better to me, notably), but as a whole, they're visibly dated and I doubt their color-grading is very faithful to the movies' original intentions. It thus isn't surprising to find some disappointing.

The sell sheet says it is two discs, but this is Mill Creek and they jammed four Gamera movies on a single Blu-ray.

I'm going to be curious to see what the Blu Ray review sites say about this disc. I'm not a professional, although I do know a bit about photography and cinematography, and I've got a lot of experience watching Blu Rays certainly. Something is wrong with the transfer, in my opinion. It shouldn't look so dark that you have to pump up the TV controls just to see the expressions on faces in the interior scenes.

One interesting point though. Last night I was reading the section of the book "Woody Allen on Woody Allen" on H&W and Woody says: "... I said to myself, why not just start to make some films where only the content is important. Pick up the camera, forget about the dolly, just hand-hold the thing and get what you can. And then, don't worry about color correcting it, don't worry about mixing it so much, don't worry about all this precision stuff and just see what happens."

Anyone know if the Woody Allen blu ray sets released in England have been the same transfers that come out on blu ray here? I'm referring to, for instance, "Woody Allen: Seven Films 1986-1991".
