I was thinking myself on the train this morning that I hope this year at least brings
L'avventura.

There's so many films which need to be upgraded, I agree, but I'm kinda worrying this year is going to end up mainly just upgrading existing titles or ones which had barebones releases like the MGMs. I hope we get plenty of unavailable older things as well, 2010 was such a good year for this, at least the first three quarters were.

Some dude on the Criterion Facebook page is saying that The Royal Tenenbaums and The Double Life of Veronique will be announced today. He could just be talking out of his ass, but I figured it was worth mentioning.

I'm gonna go against the grain and hope that Macunaima finally crystallizes.

They figured people weren't unhappy enough with the January line-up so they'll announce Border Radio on 3D Blu-Ray and nothing else tonight.

Reason for delay: Criterion still debating whether or not to include the yet to be published "HD versus Film" book by Tommy Wiseau as an extra for The Room (Blu-ray). Naturally, if it's included it would mean digipack packaging.

I'm choosing to take this seriously.

Not as good as january but an eclipse might make it as good. Still, a very solid slate. I hope we continue to get two catalog upgrades a month in 2011.

But what about Eclipse?

Very pleased with this slate: Blu upgrade for Veronique, a proper release for Sweet Smell of Success, and at long last Still Walking, my favourite film of 2010. Seems Brighter Summer Day wasn't quite ready for release yet. Expected the lack of a Eclipse set for this month - on the plus side the mainline is pretty much stacked this month.

I like the balanced release slate--2 classics, 2 new films, and 2 Blu-ray upgrades. Hard for anyone to complain, even if you don't care for a couple of the titles. Still, I suspect we'll find a way...

Agreed, swo. Especially hard to complain when the two classics are both of the stone cold variety.

Great month. Granted, the Criterion Cast of Tokyo Story has me a bit bummed that's not getting an upgrade this month, but it's surely coming in 2011 at some point, so no biggie.

Same goes for The Royal Tenenbaums. Still holding out hope that that wasn't hearsay.

THANK FUCKING GOD! (if he/she/it exists) For at least a year I've been tempted to buy "Double Life of Veronique" because something about the spoiler-free descriptions I've read about the movie make it seem like something I'd like (which is how I ended up blind-buying "Chungking Express" Blu-ray at full retail, one of the best movies I've come across). I can't tell you the number of times I've walked to the cash register during a Criterion sale (not just the B&N one) or had the movie in my Cart (DeepDiscount) and just never had the courage to pull the trigger on "Veronique." Always ended up putting the movie back in the shelf or removing it from my Cart. It sounds dumb but, if my "Chungking Express" experience is anything to go by (it's become one of my all-time favorites), the years-long expectations set on the movie and the natural high of seeing it on Blu-ray for the very first time will be a quasi-religious experience (cinematically speaking). Day One! :)
Nothing else that month interest me except maybe "Amarcord" is the transfer is a substantial-enough improvement over the SD DVD to merit an upgrade.

I'd be surprised if they upgraded Lady Vanishes ahead of 39 Steps. The prospect of a Cocteau Blu almost makes me regret that I recently bought the DVD reissue of Beauty.

I just don't think the quality source materials are available to make another The Lady Vanishes upgrade worthwhile.

Sweet Smell looks like a fantastic little package, especially since I'm a sucker for documentaries and interviews with current directors.

SSS at #555 along with S and SW. Now that is what makes this silly.
