David, have you not seen Swamp Water, or was it the caps that got you excited? You're in for a real treat either way!

According to Facebook, this is what's coming in the upcoming months. I'm really disappointed with AS GOOD AS IT GETS - the film that won a bunch of Oscars 15 years ago should be released in a mainline, not by a niche studio.
DESIREE (1954) BLU-RAY - April 10th
BELL, BOOK & CANDLE (1958) BLU-RAY - April 10th
JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH (1959) BLU-RAY - May 8th
THE BIG HEAT (1953) BLU-RAY - May 8th
John Steinbeck's THE WAYWARD BUS (1957) BLU-RAY - June 12th
AS GOOD AS IT GETS (1997) BLU-RAY - June 12th

Ashirg, I could not find the $10 off Twilight Time coupon. In case it is still available, can you give more details? Thanks

Once you have it in your hand, you will forget about the 50 bucks you spent on it. It looks really good! The movie just feels "right" to me in so many ways. I can't put my finger on it. I am not really a huge fan of Renoir, but this one really gets to me. There is also a (small) booklet which talks a little about the production of the film that I found interesting.
I really can't wait for The Big Heat in May. I have 40 bucks already earmarked for it.

Big Heat was also promised for 2012 from Gaumont Blu Ray in France. I am guessing the two editions will be from entirely different masters so it's worth waiting to compare. Either way French postal rates are as horrendous as Twilight Time to Oz.
Oh wow, I didn't realize. I am torn though because I feel like importing the Big Heat is going to cost an arm and a leg. Importing stuff from France is much more difficult than importing from the UK.

Yeah,
BB&C was pretty much already a must for me, but that cover is a deal clincher.
See, Criterion? Remember? That is what great cover art looks like.

Covers aside, Desiree's still probably the most exciting Twilight Time future title for me, though that could all change once I actually get to see it haha

I've waded through my first purchase $140 for 4 Blu-ray's! Very pleased with Twilight Time. My only complaint is the transfer for Demetrius and the Gladiators. Not worth the $35 but a pleasant film for the Delmer Daves completist.

I hate that 'Big Heat' cover. It's ham-handedly "noirish" in a way that isn't true to the spirit of the film. It reminds me of those neo-rockabilly guys sporting 3-foot pompadours and about a gazillion tattoos. Taste just doesn't enter the equation. If the title didn't occupy 1/4th of the entire cover space it would help.

That's the booklet cover. It's a cute gag, but I'm glad it's inside the case.
The actual cover seems perfect to me.
The Big Heat is part of the reason that venetian blinds are considered a noir trope. I find it absolutely true the the spirit of the film, and if that's a production still they found, it's a pretty amazing one. Title treatment is wonderful.
andyli wrote:Have any extras been announced for The Big Heat?
As a general rule, Twilight Time releases don't have extras outside of the isolated score and a trailer. Their contracts stipulate that they are not allowed to create new supplements, though they have occasionally been allowed to use ones already owned by the licensing studio. If
The Big Heat does end up with any supplements on it, they will be the pieces found in the Sony Noir Collection. Twilight Time generally does not announce the inclusion of these pieces in advance.

I do like the booklet design, and I think it's more than a gag. Coffee is integral to the film's theme of self-examination prompted by the destruction of facades (Debby's superficial beauty/Bannion's ideal family life in the midst of great corruption/ and the facade of a functioning democratic society blown away by the release of Duncan's letter). Lang saw it as so important made it the film's tagline - "Keep the coffee hot", suggesting that the advancement of humanity depends on the occasional disruption of our illusions.
The boiling coffee also carries a suggestion of violence and tension, in perfect accord with the tone of the film, something the cover design unfortunately lacks.
That being said, the cover they chose is at least a step better than the Columbia R1 DVD cover, in that the designer may well have spent more than 5 minutes on it. So at least it's progress. In any event,
The Big Heat on Blu-Ray is an instant buy regardless of my feelings for the cover.

That's really good analysis on the coffee's symbolic role in the film. If there was a good still of the coffee pot from the film, I think it might work great as a cover. Even though it's obviously an original illustration, the pot on the booklet pic looks a little clip-arty to me, and sitting on the tray with its steamy letters doesn't feel like it's carrying any of the implications of tension or violence that you described. If someone hadn't seen the film and saw that cover, they wouldn't think the film was a tension-filled noir; they'd think it was a film about a diner.
