Ouch, you can really see how much the color Jour de fête is a mess compared to the BFI version... How sad. I don't want to spend 50$ for the OOP blu-ray, yet I'm pretty sure it's only going to get worse soon.

As disappointing as the colour issues are on Jour de Fete, it's not a favourite Tati of mine so I think I'm going to be content with the b/w version. I sold all my BFI BDs so I'm now going to have to get the Criterion set, for better or worse.

I didn't really care all that much for Tati's films but I was going to give them another chance with this boxset. Such a shame that it isn't definitive. Now I am a bit bitter that my BFI discs didn't go for all that much on eBay several months ago either.

Also a minor quibble is that the original version of Holiday looks much less sharp than the re-release. But this seems to be the case for both the BFI and Criterions.

Excuse me for my ignorance here, but have Criterion "fixed" Playtime or completely messed it up?

Isn't the colorized Jour de Fete just an upscale?

They certainly haven't changed the blacks if that's what you're referring to (but of course, they may not actually need changing), but everything else about it looks great. The 1994 Jour de fete is an upscale, as is the 1953 Monsieur Hulot's Holiday and probably My Uncle, though Gary hasn't provided information on that one.

It is, but the original version on the BFI is in HD whilst the version on the Criterion is upscaled SD. There's definitely an appreciable difference.

If you want what they offer, definitely.

Tati recut the original neg to make the re-release, so the original cut is unavoidably a generation removed - even if you're comparing HD transfers.

Out of curiosity, are there any extras exclusive to the Studio Canal box that are essential, or will the Criterion box plus the BFI Blus suffice?

Well, just bit the bullet and bought Holiday from moviemail, which has it in stock for 9.99 GBP.

The Uk BFI Jour De Fete on Amazon UK is from a third party seller.

It is a mystery why Criterion decided to put an older master of the color version when BFI had an HD master. Possibly since they could only work with the Studio Canal masters and nothing else? Has anyone inquired Criterion about it?

I might have missed this in earlier posts, but does the set include 'The Comedy of Jacques Tati' off the original Trafic release?

I haven't gone through everything yet in the set but I don't believe that feature, which was an interview, appears on the set. I'm only through Mon oncle, though, so it could spring up, just called something else.

The specs of the French set can be found here, and they list the Thomson-Color Jour de fete, the 1953 Holiday and My Uncle all as MPEG-2 - 576i. It's a sure thing the Criterion will use the same master but upscaled (and speed corrected I imagine).

The last reply was quick but yes, it's definitely an upscale. You can tell just by looking at it but i still compared it to the BFI and the difference in quality is huge.

The Criterion set seems to be a winner in the supplements, but a loser in the quality of the alternate films. Not happy with that.

Well, I think the selling point is the new transfers of the main features, like the 4k playtime.

Does anybody know if the Playtime scan is from the 70mm elements?

The notes state the scan was of the original 65mm negative.
