Re: Awards Season 2016
But my point, as I'm sure you know, is that Jeff Bridges is widely considered to be a lock for an Oscar nom and he was passed over for Foster here (which is unlikely to happen at the Oscars, though Foster may squeak in, but with not instead of Bridges)

I did not realize that was your point, and you are probably correct.

Re: Awards Season 2016
Paterson doesn't have any flashy performances and is about as understated a movie as one can possibly imagine. I'm not surprised.

Re: Awards Season 2016
Turns out this was awarded the Robert Altman award, which means in lieu of any individual nominations, the whole cast gets an acting trophy (Spotlight won it last year)mfunk9786 wrote:Notably, no acting nominations for Moonlight, which seems bonkers to me.

Fair enough - I wonder if the individual nominations are manipulated in any way to accommodate that sort of thing

I hope "Hunter Gatherer" wins the John Cassavetes Award. It was in my top 3 at SXSW this year, where I thought it should have won the Jury Prize.

Pretty sure John Cope liked the film and is saying that coming out in favor of it should not be a bold choice given what he perceives to be the film's myriad qualities

Yeah, that's it. Sorry about the confusion. I did think when I posted that that it sounded awkward but wasn't sure how to better phrase it, especially when trying to remain brief.

Wow to the snubs of Jackie and La La Land, but I guess Adams is emerging as a dark horse Best Actress possibility yet again

Re: Awards Season 2016
I would be so happy if the Oscars went that way. But believe you me, La La Land is the biggest piece of Oscar bait imaginable - actual Oscar bait - not dull, easy to ignore, stuffy prestige. It's a love letter to old Hollywood, following your dreams, the magic of showbusiness, the city of Los Angeles itself, yada yada yada. Its flaws will be very easily overlooked by the Academy in a way that other groups won't.

Can O.J.: Made in America get an Oscar nomination? At 467 minutes, will it be the longest nominated film?

And a no to the second. The longest nominated film at the moment is the 632 minutes Polish Nights and Days. It did not win though.

Critics Choice Award nominations
Has anyone seen Lion? The trailers make it seem like Dev Patel is the central character, yet he's nominated for best supporting actor?

I feel like Hacksaw Ridge is shaping up to be this year's surprise over-performer

Re: Awards Season 2016
Seconded. It's the exact time of the movie that the older, white, male constituency of the Academy loves. And honestly, it's pretty good for what it is.domino harvey wrote:I feel like Hacksaw Ridge is shaping up to be this year's surprise over-performer
