Paterson doesn't have any flashy performances and is about as understated a movie as one can possibly imagine. I'm not surprised.

Turns out this was awarded the Robert Altman award, which means in lieu of any individual nominations, the whole cast gets an acting trophy (Spotlight won it last year)

I would be so happy if the Oscars went that way. But believe you me, La La Land is the biggest piece of Oscar bait imaginable - actual Oscar bait - not dull, easy to ignore, stuffy prestige. It's a love letter to old Hollywood, following your dreams, the magic of showbusiness, the city of Los Angeles itself, yada yada yada. Its flaws will be very easily overlooked by the Academy in a way that other groups won't.
