To be honest, I feel bad for them. I already have enough issues getting on time through a 6 movies set, I can't even fathom having so much to review.

This is my placeholder for my future 300th Criterion (currently at 251 with a recent addition of WCP2 due to the recent flash sale). I'm sure I can have $400 and some to spare by then =]

But how worthy are the unknown documentaries, except as a look into that specific Olympic Games? I mean with the exception of Olympia and Tokyo Olympiad, are the rest of the films worthy cinematically and more, and not just an historical document?

...why does it matter if it's arbitrarily decreed they're "worthy"? Many of them are from significant filmmakers and have never received a decent release before.

I was asking personally. Not from a release viewpoint. I was curious as to weather spent money on this or not.

Vision of Eight at the very least is very good with several excellent segments. I can't speak for the rest of the unmentioned, but given the names attached to some of these it is hard to expect them to be merely mediocre.

Some of these films are available to watch on the official Olympics YouTube channel, if you want to get an idea of what they're like. Here is the 1968 Grenoble film, Snows of Grenoble, for instance. I did notice that the running times on YouTube don't always match what is listed on Criterion's site, so the online versions may not be the uncut films. The version of Tokyo Olympiad on YouTube is definitely not the full version.

The Youtube link is actually 117mins, not 156mins! Thus Yaanu just wrote it down wrong (as Youtube displays it as 1hr 56mins), as opposed to missing content.

Granted, we'll have to see the final specs to make sure an intern didn't goof when writing down the times: I know IMDB isn't very accurate, but it lists Los Angeles 1984 - 16 Days of Glory as 145mins, while Criterion's site lists it as 284mins.

I'm guessing Tooze has given up reviewing the set? Have there been any other reviewers plowing through it & giving their thoughts?

I knew I should have added a disclaimer.

I'll also add that all of the Youtube videos are at 25fps, meaning some (but not all) of the running time differences are probably down to 4% speedup. But even the videos with the same runtimes as the Criterion listings are 25fps, so I'm not sure what's going on there.

25fps is a common standard for delivery to apps like say the Red Bull channel on Apple TV, the IOC may have had 25fps prepared for streaming platforms because they're internally shifting everything to 25fps for streaming.

Or because the Tokyo olympics are on a 50hz electrical grid they need to make everyone shoot 25 Fps so all the artificial light doesn't flicker? On the other hand South Korea is 60 he so no need for 25 fps

Regardless the deliverables packet that resulted in those uploads probably specified 25fps files for streaming purposes, so they wanted it for some reason.

I'd be inclined to believe the runtimes on the Criterion site, in part because they do perfectly add up to the listed total runtime which is a number I expect *has* been vetted in an official QA capacity (as it's undoubtedly somewhere on the packaging). So framerate differences/alternate cuts must account for the differences.

Looks like there is indeed a Criterion spine on it (if you look carefully enough - opposite side from the gold "100 Years").

Is anyone other than Tooze reviewing the set? Or did all the checkdisc reviewers get too overwhelmed?

Absolutely breathtaking. Guessing I’ll get all moon-eyed one night during the winter games and order this. I don’t have a ton of Olympic knowledge or nostalgia per se but it seems like something that is begging to be owned.
