I think your best bet is to email
these guys.

This is by no means definitive, but I contacted Amazon as soon as I heard that Criterion acknowledged the glitch, and they sent a replacement right away (even before I could send a "please wait until you can confirm that it's a corrected disc" email). Unsurprisingly, the replacement was still missing the scene. I emailed again, and received the reply this morning that they could not supply a corrected disc and would issue a credit instead. So either Criterion hasn't managed to get a second printing out yet, or it was too much hassle for Amazon to sort it out. (Either way, I'm happy).

Well then, seeing as how you have an extra copy just lying around...

So, has anyone emailed DVDPacific, CriterionDVD or Criterionco?

I got my replacement copy of Jigoku in the mail from Criterion today. I had sent them the whole package (disc, case, inserts), and it looks like they just switched discs and sent the same thing back to me (rather than send me a whole new package) which of course is fine with me. So, my back cover still says "first printing" but the disc definitely says "second printing".
I mailed my disc back on October 30 (before the replacements were ready), so it looks like they are ready now for those who were waiting.

You mean from criteriondvd.com?

I got mine too. They sent the disc in a thin cd case, I think it may have been the one I sent it in, I don't remember if I sent it in a thin black cd case, or a back half of a regualr cd case....I got it today, says second printing, the disc was kind of scuffy and dusty too.....heh.
edit, I got this from Criterion themselves, mailed the disc only to them, no retailer.

Y'all think I can take the subway to their offices, go up and ask the secretary for a replacement on the spot? It'd be simple and save time and postage...

Has anyone received the new Jigoku by an online retailer? I usually order for criteriondvd, so if anyone knows whether they carry the second printing disc it would be very helpful... Thanks!

Anyone know why the 2 minutes glitch is still not listed as a
"known problem"?

For anyone who's interested in ordering, that's the answer I received on the 12th of December, when I e-mailed criteriondvd.com, regarding the problem:
At this time we have only first printing in
stock. Please check back later.
Thank you,
Irene

I'm afraid that online retailers haven't received second printing yet...

I guess I should have checked here first... I just received a copy of Jigoku (from DVDEmpire), and it says 1st printing on the back of the box. So, did anyone buy this recently, and can report back.... Is it possible that Criterion replaced the faulty discs, but are still selling them in "first printing" boxes? I find it a little poor, if after almost six months of knowing about this problem, some kind of proactive measure has not been taken to ammend the error by Criterion.

I have been wondering the same and have so far not bought the title for the same reason. I have yet to hear of anyone owning a "second printing" cover, and I know of no store selling such a thing.

Based on Filmghost's report above, I am afraid there is little hope that there is a 2nd edition disc hiding inside the 1st edition box. In any event, I will check the disc tonight, and report back... truly stupid of me not to check here first.

I have seen a Jigoku with "2nd printing" cover at a local Borders, so they do exist. On the other hand: I sent my 1st printing disk to Criterion and received two postcards with the replacement. So possibly some of you want to pick up the 1st printing ...

Okay, thanks for clearing that up. Living abroad I don't want to go through the hassle of having to explain the situation for my usual etailer and make them try to exchange the disc. I'd rather wait another few months till the 2nd printing is more common. Got a lot of other discs to watch and order anyway: Rohmer box finally on its way

Sure enough, my copy of
Jigoku has the error described. I guess it is still not safe to buy this online.

Since I was quick to register my disappointment concerning Criterion's treatment of the issue surrounding the glitch on Jigoku, I will be equally quick in reporting my contentment in their treatment of me personally.
I finally wrote Criterion directly about the disc yesterday, and they very promptly replied to me today, telling me to return the faulty disc, and that they will then forward a replacement. I did point out of course that I live in Sweden, and that did not make a difference apparently. This would appear to be a change in their policy, and may be of interest to other overseas customers.
They did not on the other hand reply to any of my questions concerning forthcoming releases, which I very opportunistically had included in my mail.

Is it safe to buy this DVD online yet? Are there second prints at places like CD Wow or Caiman yet?

I just got a first printing from the recent DVD Planet sale, but Criterion was quick to respond to my email and offered to replace it.

I received the corrected second pressing of JIGOKU (1960) when I ordered it from Deep Discount DVD during their recent Criterion sale. By the way,
here is my take on the film itself.

Thanks for the information. That's a great review too.
It might be an idea for other purchasers of the second printing who stumble across this thread to let us know which other online retailers have got it.

I ordered Jigoku from the Amazon price mistake/sale and I received the first printing with the missing scene, so apparently there are still some out there.

I emailed "Jon Mulvaney" on Oct 2 about my "first printing" copy, and received the following reply on Oct 4 (from Tyson Kubota):
We only have rights to sell and distribute our products in Region 1 territories (the United States and Canada). Therefore, we cannot directly ship any DVDs to the UK. However, if you could provide a shipping address in North America, we could ship a replacement copy to that address for forwarding to you.
I hope this helps, and thank you for your interest in Criterion.
I'm going to bite the bullet and buy another copy. It's my own fault, for taking so long to read this topic. (I've had the "first printing" copy for 12 months.)
