For posterity here is "The Wacky World of Koreyoshi Kurahara" version of the I Hate But Love cover:

Agreed, actually my favorite covers of the month, and looking forward to the set more than anything.swo17 wrote:I'm surprised no one's commented on the Kurahara covers (one of which is down at the moment). They might be the best Eclipse covers yet. The Killing is also great of course.

Oh, God I wasn't talking about Dita Parlo! I simply meant I didn't like the layout. Now that I look at what I wrote, I did word that terribly. Thankfully only one person noticed!triodelover wrote:You have the smiling visage of the lovely Dita Parlo and you complain. Some guys would bitch if they were hanged with a new rope. The Fonz wrote:Oh, crap, Dom! We've got bigger fish to fry: Just look at that Vigo artwork!
To be fair, I do like the color scheme and the font... but not so much what's pictured and how it's pictured.

Re: Criterion & Eclipse Cover Art & Packaging Babble-on Vol.
I must say I find the Giant Heads of Vigo cover disappointing, considering how visually rich the films are. If you want Dita Parlo, how about her writhing in her sleep? If you want Jean Daste, how about an underwater shot? Or a snowstorm of feathers? Actually, considering the need to encompass a number of films, this could have been a good opportunity for some original artwork.
Still and all, at least it's not iCul-de-Sac.

I'm thinking the Vigo release, it still saying "Box Set", will be a great looking digi, so that means we might have more images to look foward to as one big artwork package, not just the cover (since there is 4 films to cover). So I doubt this is just going to be a cover in a plastic case. Prob more Breathless or Sweet Smell of Success 1 disc digi with a good size booklet (says 4 essays, and obviously pages of photos and such).

I might be mistaken, but isn't that shot used for the cover part of Daste's underwater/dream sequence? It's been so long so I'm probably wrong.zedz wrote:I must say I find the Giant Heads of Vigo cover disappointing, considering how visually rich the films are. Yeah, those literal floating heads aren't a Photoshop job. It's a still from the film.thatobscurecharm wrote:I might be mistaken, but isn't that shot used for the cover part of Daste's underwater/dream sequence? I HATE the Vigo cover. My god, what is Criterion thinking? Why not just go with the terrific L'Atalante movie poster?

I hope someone could help me out with this but I'm limiting myself to blu-rays released in digipak/cardboard sleeves and I understand some were reissued in standard plastic cases, were any of the following titles part of these reissues?
- Seven Samurai
- Amarcord
- Bottle Rocket
- Chungking Express
- The Last Metro

I still can't believe that Solaris has such a terribly uninteresting design. Uninspiring and muddied.

The following were reissued in plastic: Bottle Rocket, Chungking, Last Metro and Marienbad. Videodrome was released in plastic with a cardboard slip cover.Breathless wrote:I hope someone could help me out with this but I'm limiting myself to blu-rays released in digipak/cardboard sleeves and I understand some were reissued in standard plastic cases, were any of the following titles part of these reissues?

He's asking which were originally issued in digipacks then had their cases replaced by the plastic ones.
Bottle Rocket, Chungking Express, and Last Year at Marienbad were all re-released in the plastic cases, maybe Last Metro but I'm not sure on it.

I think he's also saying he's interested in any releases in new (non-terrible) digipacks as well though.

I don't know how long they've been available, but I just noticed that Criterion is now selling empty cases of the custom BD variety, in case anyone needs them, at this link. Singles are $2.95 each, or a pack of five for $12.00.

by "limiting myself" you mean that you won't buy films released in anything other than digipacks? seriously?Breathless wrote:I hope someone could help me out with this but I'm limiting myself to blu-rays released in digipak/cardboard sleeves and I understand some were reissued in standard plastic cases, were any of the following titles part of these reissues?

Well, I don't know if it means anything but I've just received Blu copies of The Last Metro and Sweet Smell of Success, purchased from MovieTyme earlier this month, and both arrived as digipacks. So I guess those two can be bought in confidence!

That's not really so crazy, I limit myself to releases which either have green or pink prominently on the cover - it's a hard life missing out on a lot of great stuff, but I still have my pride.HistoryProf wrote:by "limiting myself" you mean that you won't by films released in anything other than digipacks? seriously?Breathless wrote:I hope someone could help me out with this but I'm limiting myself to blu-rays released in digipak/cardboard sleeves and I understand some were reissued in standard plastic cases, were any of the following titles part of these reissues?

I'm going to go ahead and answer the guy's question even though I don't understand the motivation behind it:
Crappy O-sleeve digipak
- Bottle Rocket
- Chungking Express
- The Last Metro
- Last Year at Marienbad
- The 400 Blows
- El Norte
- The Last Emperor
- The Man Who Fell to Earth
- The Third Man
Note: Some of these have been seen in the replacement Blu-ray cases, which can also be bought at criterion.com for $5 a pop. If you order any of these titles online, I don't know if you can be positive whether you'll get the O-sleeve packaging or the plastic cases.
Nice new style digipak
- Seven Samurai
- Amarcord
- Sweet Smell of Success
- The Leopard
- America Lost and Found: The BBS Story
- Breathless
- by Brakhage: An Anthology, Volumes One and Two
- The Night of the Hunter
Plastic case with a slipcover so it looks like a digipak on your shelf
- Videodrome
- Che
- The Complete Monterey Pop Festival
- Yojimbo/Sanjuro

I would *guess* that if you order Chungking Express or Bottle Rocket at this point, you'll likely get the plastic case. It's been awhile since I've seen either of those digis on store shelves.
