I have the Withnail & I BD. It isn't great and a CC upgrade would be most welcome.

So somebody has leaked that Criterion is going to release a David Lynch film? Again? This'll be fun!

Somewhere on this board there was a confirmation from Movies Unlimited's newsletter that Mulholland Dr, La Dolce VIta and something else I can't remember were all forthcoming from Criterion
EDIT: Time Bandits and the somewhere was the previous page of this very thread!

I guess you missed this.
The same site confirmed The Innocents weeks (months?) before it was announced.

Movies Unlimted is a distro, so I'm guessing there was some sort of general Q4 newsletter or email sent to MU and other retailers telling them in broad strokes about the kinds of things they can expect from the company in the final quarter of the year

Seems as though Movies Unlimited first broke news about
The Innocents on
May 6th, and the title was announced a little over a month later on June 16th. So, if that timeframe is anything to go by, maybe we'll be seeing both
Mulholland Dr. and
La Dolce Vita before the end of the year!

I used to work at MU, and their system would generally get release updates 4-6 weeks prior to CC announcements.

I wasn't sure where to post this so I chose here since I can't find a Criterion Suggestion or Zeffirelli folder.
For me the most exciting announcement for 2014 is Polanski's MACBETH.
I'm now wondering if Criterion has ever considered Zeffirelli's ROMEO AND JULIET?
Along with MACBETH, Zeffirelli's ROMEO & JULIET stands out as one of the greatest Shakespeare adaptations of all time.
The score by Rota is beyond beautiful.

Is this the first OoP title to be re-released?
Lots of OOP titles have been re-released. If we're limiting ourselves to the DVD era and beyond, I believe
The 400 Blows was the first title to go OOP (even before
Salò) and the first to be reissued (with the Doinel box in 2003). That's unless you count
Seven Samurai, which had the whole "second printing" thing where the first printing was recalled to remove the restoration demo from the menu options.

The article indicates that
La dolce vita was "just licensed for future release", so it seems quite unlikely that we'll see it by the end of the year. The announcement is exciting nonetheless, but expectations should probably be tempered somewhat in the case of that release.
This has indeed been a tremendous year; I feel almost as if I'm being ungracious by hoping that L'avventura will be released by year's end.

I'm pretty sure
Romeo and Juliet is one of the Paramount titles now being distributed by Warner, so its chances of a Criterion release are probably fairly small.

Pretty much
confirmed we will be getting an upgrade of L'Avventura. Possibly adding Les Blank's Hot Pepper as well.

I'm guessing we'll get a least one Les Blank Eclipse set, possible several, centered around Lousiana, Music, Dance, Food, etc.

If they are restoring Hot Pepper, I'm thinking it's coming to blu-ray as their Eclipse sets are as is with no restoration...

There was some talk a while ago of a restoration of Hoop Dreams. This being the film's 20th anniversary, and with James' documentary about Roger Ebert being released soon, what are the chances of this getting upgraded this year?

It could happen, though I think for Criterion a much bigger consideration than a film's anniversary is when the current press run sells down to the point that they need to order a new pressing or have a revamped release ready to go.

This may be comparing apples and oranges since it refers to a brand new title rather than an upgrade of an existing one, but wasn't Everyones Favorite, Favorite, Favorite, Favorite Film aiming for an anniversary release before delays slid it to the right a couple of months? Has Criterion ever tried for an anniversary aside from this occassion?

There's been a rather stunning upgrade of Hoop Dreams actually. They went back to the original tapes it seems and there's a lot more picture info as well as vastly upgraded quality. I believe there are some caps on the Hoop Dreams page.

Yes, and that's the main reason for this speculation about a new release. When the time is right, Criterion should take the old DVD out of print and replace it.
