Prohibitive cost on the production end or lack of a market for the product?
At the moment, both.

Monterey Pop
Grand Budapest Hotel or Tree Of Life
West Side Story or Princess Bride
Or maybe all five together, and give a strong lead-in to the Olympic box set.

The Princess Bride isn't happening - MGM has a 30th anniversary edition coming in September.

West Side Story is in play? I thought the BD released a few years ago was supposed to be pretty definitive and full of bonus material.

From what I understand, that BD doesn't have the original 6-track mix, but rather a modern recreation derived from the 4-track mix.

It just seems like a good educated guess, I guess. It's a solid film beloved by many, from Sony, a recent title that'll require less work, a big November title, and from a female director (Criterion, to their credit, have seemed to make a concerted effort to include quality films from female directors this year---four so far, compared to last year's one, which came in December and was also a recent title).
Desert Hearts
West Side Story
The Breakfast Club
Toni Erdmann
The Best Years of our Lives
The Lady Eve
Tiebreaker:
The Best Years of our Lives will get the
Cat People treatment.

I imported the UK Blu-ray last week, so that should pretty much confirm it for tomorrow's announcements.

I'll change it to reflect the Guess Thread logic that
Happy Together could not possibly be released since it's a Kino title and they just used their biennial Kino chip.

Criterion has so much their sitting on, it's hard to make a guess. There will definitely be a surprise (like Barry Lyndon or last years Punch Drunk Love) and a huge upgrade
I'll say:
John Hughes Boxset (Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club, Weird Science)
My Desert Heart
West Side Story
Dragon Inn
The Circus
Upgrades:
The Virgin Spring
The Passion of Joan of Arc or
Stray Dog / Drunken Angel
Obviously not all those titles but those all seem possibly coming soon.

I'm still hoping for Shinoda's Silence so that people can see a good version of that story.

Here in France on the 15th August it is a national holiday to celebrate Assumption(The ascension of the Virgin Mary). In the US it seems that every 15th of the month is False Assumption

Oh damn, right before the John Hughes boxset gets announced. Must be a cosmic thing.

Maybe they just assumed we would realize the Olympic box was supposed to tide us over until the January announcements.

I think Criterion would have said something if the Olympic set was the only thing being released. I mean they can't be that big of trolls can they?

The announcements this month are for November, right? Or am I just more behind on things than I thought?

No, they are, but they skipped ahead either because of some weird Olympics-mandated time frame or just to explain why they'll be skipping over #900 in November.
