IndieWire does that a lot. Honestly, it's pretty stupid, lame reporting, just pure clickbait.

So, of the CNC funded restorations (thank you France!), the only remaining restorations not to be released (or forthcoming) is Celine and Julie Go Boating. Is that correct? I would assume that some prints of C&J will be struck and a Bluray will happen in 2016. I don't know much about the business side of things, but since it is a new restoration it no longer resides with BFI. Is that correct?
Are there any other titles cleared for restoration besides the upcoming Jacques Rivette Collection and C&J? I read somewhere the price tag on OUT 1's restoration was well north of 1 Million. That is amazing. Thanks again CNC!

Well for a 10 hour film, that's only 200k per 2 hour film.

A totally separate issue. The BFI still has the UK rights, so nobody else can release any version of the film without their permission - but they'd have to specifically licence the new restoration in addition to their existing agreements.
For a parallel example, although Arrow licensed
Thief and
Sweet Smell of Success from MGM, in order to release Criterion's 4K restorations they had to strike separate agreements with them.

Wow. I wonder if BFI is considering that? Is this a fairly recent restoration? I thought New Yorker Video had a restored version touring the U.S. a couple of years ago.

Can anyone here confirm if the French Carlotta Out 1 set has english subtitles? It's noticeably absent from the back-cover although I would assume it would be identical to their upcoming U.S. set.
To answer my own question, the French set does have english subtitles and appears to be identical to the upcoming U.S. one. It gives you a Francais/English option before going to the menu. If you choose "English", it says "Carlotta US" in the corner.
So, for anyone who was planning to watch this over the holidays and was bummed by the delayed US/UK releases, this is an option.

There's a pretty good chance the Arrow discs will have noticably lesser bitrates on Out 1 because of being spread across less discs, right?

^ No. They are the same encodes*, and there are not less discs - unless you mean "THE MYSTERIES OF PARIS" documentary, which has its own disc on the Carlotta set, but shares a disc with two episodes in the Arrow version.
For that, I prefiltered the video camera footage in the documentary to squeeze it onto the same disc. The episodes themselves do not suffer as a result.
* Actually they're not 100% identical because the Carlotta set has French audio descriptive tracks, but in terms of quality they are the same.

Oh, right, I was miscalculating in my head and thought the Arrow set was spreading the long version across three discs (I think I was assuming Duelle/Noroit wouldn't be sharing a disc).
And I really appreciate the answer; it seems really clear serious thought was put into this presentation that you even accounted for one disc having a marginally smaller bitrate because of a bonus feature. Just makes me more excited.

Paris Belongs to Us announced over on Criterion.
SO what else got a restoration from Rivette that we might see pop up?

Wasn't Celine and Julie restored? I know it played Film Forum a few years ago.

Yes it was - I seem to recall it was even the first to get the treatment.

I don't know if it was a full-fledged restoration. New Yorker Films did produce a new 35mm print that looks very nice, but I'm not sure if any work has gone into preserving the original camera negative.

The HD-ready Rivette restorations so far are what's already on blu or announced (Le coup du berger, Paris nous appartient, Out 1, Spectre, Duelle, Noroît, Merry-go-round, Le Pont du Nord) plus Céline et Julie.
nolanoe wrote:Depends what else Criterion announces!! L'amour Fou and L'amour par terre, preferably!!
L'amour fou won't probably happen anytime soon; it's a StudioCanal title, and I'm pretty sure they've got no interest whatsoever in 4h12min of Rivette & Racine.

I just watched Rivette's The Nun for the first time and was blown away by it. Not sure how it took me so long to get around to it; it's an enthralling and very intelligent look at power and the many different forms of captivity a woman might have experienced in the 18th century. Shares more than a few similarities with Svankmajer's Lunacy in that sense.

An impressive film indeed. It's a shame there has never been a (post-VHS) subbed release.

Emory University is having a 15-film New Wave series on Wednesdays from now through April 20. It's free to the public. Besides the obvious ones there will be showings of
Le Pont du Nord and
Out 1: Noli Me Tangere

Does anyone have a good contact for New Yorker Films? I sent them an email last week and the email was immediately bounced back. I was looking to ask them about the status of Celine and Julie, as their website claimed a few years ago that it was coming to Blu ray but that unfortunately never happened.
