Any idea who owns it?
Made for Paramount, owned by Universal now.

Have they confirmed they're working on Brazil, or is it just a rumour?

Isn't that Studio Canal? I asked about it a time before Third Man went OOP (during Criterion's Facebook frenzy days) and they made it sound like it was off the table. The print I saw at the BFI looked great- plus played to a packed, lively crowd. Can't Studio Canal reverse its Lionsgate deal- now that they've essentially stopped their "Studio Canal Collection" line and are now inundated with Miramax? I guess, more likely, we won't be seeing anything for a long time.

Well, I'm only interested in Gilliam's final cut of this film, the one without clouds superimposed over the last shot (I'm picky that way).

So it will still get a Criterion release? I feared the Universal anouncement meant no Criterion blu.

I'm confident you'll see a Criterion release on blu-ray.
1. On DVD, Universal and Criterion both had releases.
2. For Fear and Loathing..., both Criterion and Universal issued a blu-ray edition of their own.
3. (most importantly) Criterion has said they're working on Brazil for blu-ray.

What's the mystery or worry here? The people who regularly buy Terry Gilliam movies have shown a willingness to buy them multiple times on multiple formats. Universal just wants to sell a lazily-slapped together barebones blu (prediction: people will bitch about the transfer) for twelve months. After they've had time to sell a copy to all of the downmarket Gilliam and Python fans, the inevitable Criterion two-disc blu featuring all the versions, commentaries, and special features will arrive.

I'm guessing that Universal is licensing most titles to Criterion for Blu-ray that they previously licensed to them for DVD. I'd imagine though, that they are requesting a period of exclusivity on the more mainstream titles (Fear and Loathing, Brazil, Dazed and Confused, Spartacus, Traffic, probably more). The Universal and Criterion Blu-rays of Fear and Loathing are being released 14 months apart, so I'd say that period is probably one year. Universal's edition of Traffic was released last April, Spartacus was released last May, and Dazed and Confused is coming from Universal sometime this summer.

Yeah, I suspect that's the case, particularly with Gilliam's films.
No big deal. Plenty else to buy and to see in the meantime, and I always got my Criterion DVD re-issue.

Wonder what the hold-up is on Do The Right Thing. The Uni BD will have been out 2 years in June.

They might be redoing the whole transfer. Isn't the old disc partially interlaced?

Yeah, but that wasn't a bare-bones disc. I'd be surprised if CC did put one out.

The blu of Do the Right Thing was the one where they 'corrected' the color temperature to a normal scale, away from Lee's hot oranges and yellows, right? I really hope Criterion redoes that one, that was a really disappointing move on Universal's part.

That's the one. But I had forgotten that it included most of the supplements from the Criterion DVD, so it seems unlikely that Criterion would bother with their own version.

Keep in mind that Warner Brothers has licensed SPARTACUS for their latest Kubrick Blu-ray box set, so that may further delay, or even cancel, any proposed Criterion issue.

I was searching for 'Rosetta' by the Dardenne brothers and realized I couldn't find it because it seems to never have been released on dvd in the U.S. which is a bit odd.
I assume someone asked Criterion about some Dardenne bros. films since on the 'forthcoming Criterion list' Dardenne brother films are listed as "some definite possibilities" although this was updated on 10/09.
Has anyone asked recently about anything specific from them? I would think Rosetta would be the number one front runner to be released.

Criterion Cast reports that Song of the South will be announced for July.

Actually the other day Disney re-iterated that they will more than likely never release this.
