Criterion typically pairs releases from the same director if they're simultaneously in the pipeline.

I have never seen the Game, but I am a fan of some of Fincher's films. With that said, the extras look unbelievable, and may persuade me.

Wasn't there a statement from Paramount recently that specifically stated that Zodiac was not being licensed to Criterion?

But there are no plans to revisit the project at this time. The disc going out of print has everything to do with 1) the film not catching fire at the box office and 2) the bloodshed going on in home video industry-wide. In fact, I'm a little surprised they didn't re-release it to coincide with Dragon Tattoo. I'm curious if hope for a Lili Marleen Criterion is no more? Interesting enough, I found this post from a few years ago showing "Unannounced Criterion Releases" and for the most part we know the fates of all of them (though a case can be had for the other head scratching one, Olympia) except for Lili Marleen.

For the past five months, Criterion has announced paired releases (Bergman, Soderbergh/Gray, Stillman, Dardenne(s), Carné). While there's no reason to suspect they'll keep this going, I wonder if we might see another such set in the next round? Rosemary's Baby could be partnered with The Tenant (though my own Halloween dream is for an upgrade of Jigoku alongside an individual release of Nakagawa's Ghost Story of Yotsuya).

Both films would be appropriate additions to the Collection. But the question that really bugs me is when (when, not if) Rosemary's Baby is released by Criterion, would that also include Look What's Happened to Rosemary's Baby? Rosemary's Sequel is a sequel I can't stand in the least. I doubt very much that anyone will want to release this follow-up as a stand-alone, but I know people on Facebook will keep asking for this just out of curiosity if Criterion doesn't release it on a 2-disc with the Polanski to begin with.

October looks promising regardless.

Earlier this year, it seemed like they were doing the low-MSRP titles once a month, then those stopped. I wouldn't be surprised if there was no more double-release treats.

I do not understand why they have not released Kwaidan already. They asked consumerns to vote on it several years ago. They had to be ready to release it if it won.

I can't imagine how Criterion are going to handle all the Fassbinders they now have. In the context of other directors films the bulk of which Criterion owns rights to, I think he's a much easier sell than someone like Naruse. So they won't just trickle out a couple of Eclipse sets, a couple of mainline releases, and then throw the rest up on Hulu. But I don't think he's as easy a sell as Kurosawa (and was certainly more prolific), so I don't see mainline releases for most of these films and certainly no lavish box set.

Whatever they do I hope Lili Marleen comes out soon and they put Satan's Brew on blu-ray.

I could certainly envision Merchant of Four Seasons, Mother Kusters Goes to Heaven and Fox and his Friends getting mainline releases.

I can imagine them trickling out, say, half a dozen of the higher profile titles on the mainline over several years, maybe in pairs, then packaging bunches of the harder sells in Eclipse sets. "Early Fassbinder" seems like an obvious candidate for Eclipse.

Another option would be to stick early films onto higher-profile Blus as extras (which means that at least we'd get them in HD). I can't think of any really obvious mainline box set candidates.

What happened to The Marriage of Maria Braun? It's no longer possible for Criterion to issue the "BRD Trilogy" on Blu?

The rights moved from Wellspring to Janus - thus the boxset went OOP to reflect the new ownership (probably finished a printing and are now waiting for the Blu to be announced).

I'm too lazy to check, but are there any new Fassbinder titles in this batch as opposed to that Goethe institut run?

Sure, but there's always the Louis Malle precedent. They can certainly give Fassbinder the same treatment in the mainline.
