With the stupid-cheap Arrow sets, why would anyone ever buy a Fassbinder Eclipse?

"A Grab Bag of Fassbinder Films Without HD Transfers" isn't that catchy of a title, I suppose.

Maybe they bought up all of Wellspring's old discs and bundled them in cellophane, each with a handwritten note that reads "Fuck you."

After years of Criterion explicitly denying they were interested in Seconds, this is the sweetest victory. Also, woe be to all Amazon Marketplace price gougers stuck with copies of the Paramount disc

I already have all the old Wellspring discs, do you think Mulvaney will send me a "fuck you" note separately?

The DVD of the Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is no longer available to buy on the Criterion website. Signs of a Bluray upgrade announcement today?

it's been like this for months, but sure, since it'd mirror Tenenbaums last August.

For a $5 replacement fee.

Same for Armageddon. I wouldn't read into it.

I didn't realise it had been like this for months. I was just checking likely upgrade pages today for clues. Inside info tells me that a long-delayed title will finally be announced today. My guess is Picnic at Hanging Rock.

Must be something to do with Buena Vista not wanting them to sell the DVDs on their site, but heaven knows why.

NTSC.
(Or was that a rhetorical question?)

If it's worth paying several times over the cost for less films in NTSC, than go with God

Always worth paying more to do something right.
Plus, just in general, the Arrow sets were adequate but I would hope for some improvement beyond the standards issue.

They usually don't announce for at least another hour and half.

Maybe this will be their first Eclipse that hits blu-ray (fingers crossed!)

Very Very happy about the Earrings of Madame de upgrade!
Very Very disappointed by Early Fassbinder Standard Def. Eclipse

Very excited about Seconds and especially the Early Fassbinder Eclipse. I've still never seen a Fassbinder film (only parts of World on a Wire which I really liked, though was tired while watching and fell asleep). So, I assume that this will be a good place to start with his films.
Obviously, it would have been nice to see those come to Blu-Ray, but for these films it almost seems logical to place them in an Eclipse set. Truth is that Eclipse needs to extend out to Blu-Ray at this points.

Re: Fassbinder: They must have a separate Eclipse set of the TV work in mind if they're skipping over
Rio das Mortes and
The Niklashausen Journey (which it would seem they have the rights to).
criterion10 wrote:So, I assume that this will be a good place to start with his films.
Better than
World on a Wire at any rate, but probably not the absolute best place to start. They're simpler films, but not necessarily easy to grasp without some context.

I'm curious when or if they are releasing the shorts because that's the biggest advantage Arrow have on them at the moment.

The Big City release also includes Ray's The Coward (1965).

I imagine the shorts will be supplements on a mainline release. Wellspring put
Der Stadtstreicher and
Das kleine Chaos on their release of
The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (where they really didn't belong).
