As predicted by my good self many months ago, the decision to color code the eclipse boxes will mean they will run out of attractive color combinations pretty quickly.

Expect more black and white eclipse sets in the future, or more increasingly bizarre color choices.
Unless they decide to change the uniform look of matching eclipse boxes and give each box its own individual style like regular criterion boxes.

I cant help but sadly think the flimsy, ugly looking, ridiculously designed (look a box set with no bottom to it!) inconvenient packaging slipcases and these basic, matching uniform box covers are simply a slightly snobby attempt to differentiate eclipse from criterion releases in term of market branding.
Or, if you prefer it in layman's terms "we can't let Eclipse boxes look as nice as Criterion boxes"

To my mind this is sad, because the eclipse boxes could look and be so much better constructed with no real difference in economic cost.
Its yet another example of the ubiquitous victory of marketing brand names over common sense.

That's because unique design jobs are much more expensive and Criterion have stated this is a "no-frills" line.

i think you missed my point.

But I will just try to point out the error in reasoning for your specific comment, theres a 1001 beautiful dvd boxes from other companies, produced for other dvd sets, often on sets that cost a lot less than a typical eclipse release.

Ill repeat myself just this once, this is a poor decision based on inane theories of brand marketing, not (supposedly) saving money.

It's not a box. It's a sleeve. Dispose of it.

Without the sleeve the discs sort of disappear on the bookshelf.

I think they're fine. After having the Bava AB set on my shelf it doesn't take much to satisfy me. I rather like the BW scheme. I wonder what a Bunuel set would look like? Pink?

I just alphabetize them with the rest of my discs. I don't really see what the problem is. I wish all individual DVDs came in thinpaks. They are no thinner than a CD jewel case. I see the Eclipse sleeves as a way to bundle the titles for distribution and market them as a set -- nothing more.

Not quite -- even with my contacts, but it's never kept me from finding the title I was looking for. Although I can understand why this might be a problem for members "of a certain age."

Touché mon ami. Still, my Eclipse sets sit together on the shelf, handsomely ensleeved and easily locatable. I once considered alphabetizing the Herzog/Kinski set into the collection but it became instantly clear that it wouldn't work for these ancient, bifocaled orbs.

Wrong again. It's a very common and highly effective marketing concept. If you can't afford the high quality custom design job, then you apply a template. This way your brand isn't weakened by hastily made decisions or cheap one-offs.

The motivation doesn't matter; the point is that it's inconvenient for those of us who don't throw crap like this away.

I very much doubt that Eclipse will run out of colours soon. SecondRun is using the same strategy, and they haven't *quite* repeated themselves with around two dozen releases.

You people complaining about Eclipse running out of colors remind me of the people I used to work with who stopped our website's "word of the week" feature because they "ran out of words." Did you only get the 16-pack when you were little?

personally, i like the grey and i find it quite suitable, at least for the three films in the set that i've seen ('scandal,' 'the idiot,' and 'i live in fear.')
