It looks likely to be embossed, like those lines, text, and the boys are raised.

I get a little edgy judging the covers by these images. Many of these will be in boxes and that gives a whole lotta area to play around. The Beatles' cover could be a pleasant surprise. Really like "Hearts and Minds" ... but, was quite attached to the old "All That Heaven Allows". I will withhold judgement until the box is in my greedy little hands ...

Maybe the Beatles cover will have a special effect like the Kuroneko cover. But i still find it quite weak.

The restoration of A Hard Days Night gets it's premier at the TCM festival next month. Then perhaps Janus will tour the film. I'm curious if the cover art is the touring poster that will be used by Janus.

One thing I like about the A HARD DAY'S NIGHT cover is how they've taken the "jumping" images directly from the montage in the film...meaning Ringo is shown doing his tiny jump! This catches the observer off-guard since its a twist on the standard photos of the Beatles leaping in the air (common during this period).
Still, it can't beat that great image of the Beatles running down the street that has generally been used to promote the film.

I had no idea my avatar would be such a cross-promotional juggernaut this summer.

It's the most recognizable image from the movie for sure, but some nice typography treatment could have breathed new life into it to make a great cover.
I'm betting the cover they went with will have a shiny/metallic sheen on it

Persona
The Great Beauty
The Freshman
For those concerned about shelf space, be warned that
Persona is a little thicker than most of the other 3-disc releases since it contains a fairly thick booklet.

All three of these are winners.
The Freshman's yearbook cover is one of the most clever ideas for interior packaging Criterion has offered (alongside Eating Raoul's "menu" and Ace in the Hole's "newspaper"). It might have been cool if, instead of the crowd shot, the images under the disc trays were laid out to be like graduating class pictures of the actors involved. Perhaps that idea is carried into the booklet.
It'd be nice if the cover had the texture of older yearbooks and the letters on the cover were slightly embossed, but as it is from these previews it looks sharp regardless.

How much is Martini paying them for the product placement on the cover of The Great Beauty? No Martini, no party?

But when everyone's special...no one is (i.e. I liked them more when there wasn't practically every release getting one).

The Great Beauty is an example of the type of 3-Disc release I expect to get the new 3-Disc plastic case in the future.
The Freshman might have my favorite digi packaging in some time. Just a great design.

Does anyone know where I can get clear transparent DVD and Blu-ray cases identical to Criterion's at bundled good prices?

An ebay seller has
5 for $8.97 with free shipping. They also have other listings, including one for double cases (10 for $13.50 ppd). No experience with them myself.

If you're going to buy through eBay, I suggest Casetopia. That's how I managed to get a double-disc BD case for my copy of "Benjamin Button".
Which reminds me, I should probably post that one picture here one day.
In any case, Casetopia knows what they're doing. Plus, you can buy single cases through them, I think.

I was drawing blanks last night, but volsallday is casetopia. So I do have ebay experience with them, and it was good. (That link was actually to casetopia.)

I don't know if it's credited in the movie or Criterion booklet (haven't seen/purchased yet), but does anyone know the name of the statue behind Jep on the cover/poster of The Great Beauty?
