Shane Black's The Nice Guys

Awesome.

Trailers, especially for lighter entertainment like this, have been for nearly four decades one of my favorite parts of the experience of attending and anticipating movies. I've never been one of those people who wants set photos and clips and all the other parts of the hype machine, but I've never been able to shake the habit of seeking the thrill from a good trailer that builds anticipation for a movie that hadn't been on my radar.

After watching this one, though, I've finally decided to embrace the stereotypical film snob stance of avoiding trailers whenever possible so that I can retain the experience of seeing large chunks of the plot and many of the better gags during the actual movie itself. I'm not sure why this particular trailer was the straw that severed this particular camel's spinal column, but I just can't take the feeling of regret smothering any sense of excitement after watching one of these anymore.

Yet another small piece of my long-gone childhood's ability to experience joy killed by the Hollywood marketing machine. Sigh.

I can relate to this. I used to love trailers, but now I've stopped watching them on the internet almost altogether, and I only see what I see in theaters. And even then, I've started noticing that most movies are little more than hugely extended versions of their trailers. It's deflating when a movie's over, and I realize that I wouldn't have missed anything if I had only seen the 2.5-minute trailer.

That said ... I've also come around to the idea that a really good movie can't be "spoiled" by a trailer. This is true even of movies that have a straightforward or even predictable plot - the good ones have more to offer than can be condensed into a couple of minutes runtime. I suppose it's the same quality that makes movies rewatchable and enjoyable even when (sometimes especially when) you know exactly what's coming.

So while I no longer go out of my way to watch trailers, I don't sweat it too much, either.

Oh, I totally agree... it's not the experience of watching very good to great movies that is hurt by these trailers, it's the experience of watching the trailers themselves (and to a lesser extent, mediocre to good movies that have their few good scenes overexposed in the advertising, diluting whatever appeal they may have had). That said, there are definitely moments in The Nice Guys that would have been more enjoyable to see for the first time in the context of the movie than in the trailer, in particular

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children

Find it mildly upsetting that Tim Burton's movies seem to now have become uninspired visually as well as in the other departments.

I'm okay with the more sunlit look of what they're showing us. I'm finding it more upsetting that Burton's resorting to what looks like such familiar, hackneyed material -- the plot outline, in what is of course merely a trailer, borders on cliche. And the presence of the robot known as Asa Butterworth isn't making it any more appealing.

Loving Vincent looks gorgeous. A biography of Van Gogh, each frame is an oil painting in the style of the artist.
