Yeah, it seems more likely that they decided to do this not as a way to thank us for all our support yadda yadda but because their third birthday means that if they don't do some closing out, licenses are going to start expiring with hundreds of unsold discs of many titles.

Is there a release schedule of TT titles anywhere? Now that three years of purgatory are finally over, perhaps some of these can be licensed elsewhere (you can make your Criterion/Millcreek jokes here).

TT releases from 2011/2012

Of the 36 Blu-ray titles offered, only 7 reach their expiry date in the next 12 months.

What Gregory said is the main motivation. Now that three years have passed, TT has a better idea which titles will not sell out by their license expiration dates even if it's not in the next year. None of these lower-stock titles are part of this sale:

AS GOOD AS IT GETS (about 600 left)
THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES (about 600 left)
BYE BYE BIRDIE (about 700 left)
LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN (about 800 left)
THE DRIVER (about 850 left)
HARD TIMES (about 900 left)

And none of the most recent releases.

For any international buyers gunning for a free copy of The Front on Wednesday, be advised that the Americans have already moved into daylight saving time. Meaning that, for example, 4pm EST is now 8pm in the U.K. rather than the usual 9pm.

By the time of the next promotion we'll be back to 9pm, by then having moved our clocks on the proper date, the last Sunday in March.

Signed The Front got bumped from my cart during checkout, very irritating. Was using Paypal a mistake in this instance (in that this is more likely to happen when you divert away from the SAE site for any reason)?

I got one going through Paypal.

I've managed to get others when using PayPal, but SAE have definitely stated in the past that they recommend not using it for these promotions, if only because it takes longer than simply putting in your credit card security code and hitting Confirm.

Using PayPal is probably not the reason for The Front getting bumped from your cart during checkout. They ran out of it. Same thing happened to me when I was placing my 2nd order. I got one with my first order. Amazingly the free copy lasted only a couple of minutes this time and they had 150 copies, not 100.

I lost my promotion while paying via paypal as well. I haven't seen many of the discounted titles, are there any can't miss ones?

This happened to me as well, within a couple of minutes, while trying to check out.

I watched Jane Eyre last night and was surprised to find it has garnered virtually no discussion on these boards. Quite superior to Rebecca if you ask me. Experiment in Terror, Rapture and Swamp Water are other definite musts, along with Bonjour Tristesse.

For some reason I had assumed TT had released a later version of Jane Eyre. Your comparison with Rebecca prompted me to check it out and confirm it was the 1943 version--thank you! Terrific film, if memory serves. I especially remember a very young Elizabeth Taylor's performance as Jane's consumptive childhood friend Helen.

Orson Welles is tremendous also.

As an uncredited producer, Welles brought a lot to the project, not least of which was casting Agnes Moorehead (and Erskine Sanford) from the Mercury and acquiring Bernard Herrmann to compose the score. I find Peggy Ann Gardner so strong as the young Jane (certainly when paired with Taylor) that I prefer those early scenes to the ones where Fontaine takes over.

Despite Taylor only being 12 years old here, I immediately recognised her (it may have helped that I only got done with Cleopatra a few days before!). She was very striking even then. The scenes between her and Gardner are some of the best in the film, especially her introduction when Jane is being punished on the chair (excellent cinematography here also, as well as elsewhere of course). The score is also tremendous and one of the few were I will benefit from the inclusion of it in isolated form. The transfer on the disc is "only" the old DVD HD master, but it looks very nice regardless. The blacks are incredibly inky.

I hesitate to give Welles too much credit here since George Barnes was an exceptional DP, but that particular lighting effect shown in the "chair" scene was also used in THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS during the "train station farewell" - although it's almost impossible to see it in the released version since much of the scene was cut (the surviving frame enlargements show it more clearly). Production photos show that the effect was used in Welles' staging of JULIUS CAESAR in '37 as well.

The liner notes from the Blu-ray point out that Gregg Toland was a disciple of George Barnes, and that similarities between the lighting of Eyre and Kane shouldn't necessarily be taken as evidence of Welles' hand in the actually shooting of the production. Though as you point out, the similarities extend to other Welles works as well.

Welles, of course, can be considered a disciple of Gregg Toland.
