Your Member of the Year Presents: a Vote

#1078 Post by Mr Sausage »

As your current member of the year, swo17 is curating a vote. If it wasn't for that reason, it'd be for being instrumental in making the Film Club run. Take a moment to appreciate everything he does for the Film Club and the forum by participating in the vote and discussion for these five hand-picked Criterions.

Please note that all of these films are eligible for the all-time list. That was intentional.

Le Trou is sneakily one of the best films in the collection and my personal choice for best prison film of all time

I've seen all of these and To Be or Not to Be is the best followed by Le Trou, though I'm not sure I have much to say about the latter. I taught the former though and it's aged well for me-- I always forgot how hilarious the opening is, surely Lubitsch's second-funniest beginning after Heaven Can Wait. The Sturges is of course a Sturges film so it's great. Don't like the Kurosawa or Ozu films at all, though Throne of Blood fares better of the two.

Not a fan of any really early Ozu. Seeing the Sturges in 35mm on Tuesday night. So this will motivate me to go, even though it's running far behind.

These are all movies with a lot of stuff to talk about in them- though I worry I'd be infected by Marian Keene's awful commentary in trying to talk about The Lady Eve- but To Be or Not To Be is just the strangest thing, like all the rest of these seem like they should work, it seems like it absolutely should not.

Have we ever had such a lopsided victory?

Anyway, Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia is our winner.

This dvd is a challenge to find. Only the blu-ray seems to be in wide circulation. Can it be that the last time I saw this was a vhs viewing? :?

Friend has a copy, thank goodness. Guess blu-ray was a given with the "Arrow Video" description.

It's a three-way tie. Have we ever had one of those before? With a two-way tie I can at least be somewhat impartial, but a three-way seems to demand the exercise of arbitrary power. So, arbitrary power as embodied by yours truly declares The Wages of Fear our winner.
