Am I the only one who feels that Werner Schroeter's MALINA would be perfect for the Collection?

From the Spring 2006 edition of Filmmaker Magazine---

"His films may finally find a larger audience in the U.S., however, now that they're available on DVD. (Claire Dolan and Keane were released earlier this year; Criterion Collection is currently remastering Clean, Shaven for distribution this fall.)

At this rate, getting just one Buñuel per year, I think will see The Exterminating Angel in 2010.

I don't mean to sound combative, but have you even seen the Kerrigan film? I can imagine it wouldn't be to all tastes, but to just dismiss it offhand is doing a disservice to a filmmaker who, in my opinion, transcends any cliche, including "indie."

But then again, why would you want to enrich your palate when you can just eat the same old steak every day?

OH NOOOOOOO NOT MORE INDIES, AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
Jesus christ dude, how many times do you have to be told that Criterion doesn't release specifically films that you find "important"?

I'm not a huge fan of Clean, Shaven, but I think it's a pretty solid addition to the collection. Certainly it makes a huge amt of sense given the recent spate of American indies. Those crying for the arrival of a Hartley spine (not me) should rejoice at this huge step closer. Anyway, I won't buy this one, but I'm all for it, and I'm forced to give props to a rather focused year on Criterion's part. Not my cup of tea, but they're really making a go of this theme....

I would definitely welcome Clean, Shaven. I was looking to order it a few weeks ago and discovered it's been long out of print.

Can I be allowed be the least bit disappointed that Criterion used so much space for the Rohmer boxset. On the site, it really isn't necessary to show them all as singular releases.

Perhaps Criterion could make a deal about Woody Allen films. Every DVD is so barren, that I'd like to think that some extras exist somewhere.

Unfortunately, that will never happen. They're all released already, and it's Woody himself who wants the movies to "speak for themselves", and not include anything extra. Plus, MGM owns the rights.

I would love some kind of special edition of at least one Woody Allen film from somebody though.

Do you mean why they are releasing featuring each DVD, even though they are available exclusively in the box set? As far as I can tell they always do this, even with bigger boxes like Cassavetes or Truffaut.

I think it was TCM that aired this phenomenal documentary/interview with Woody Allen last year. I had fallen asleep and had woken up when TCM was playing this so I only caught the tail end, but it seemed quite awesome (a helluva thing to wake up to) and that has yet to be released onto a DVD. Surely it would make a fun feature.

I could see MGM releasing a SE of ANNIE HALL at some point, even without Woody's involvement.

I believe you're referring to Richard Schickel's Woody Allen: A Life in Film, which like most of Schickel's best docus is primarily a face-to-face interview with the filmmaker himself. (Why, oh why, can't Schickel just stick to making these great docus instead of those lousy commentaries?!) Anyway, I agree that it would make a great extra on a special edition of one of Woody's major films -- as if that's ever going to happen, though.

haven't been around lately, have you? MGM switched distributors to Fox, particularly because of their interest in working with 3rd party dvd distributors.

OK then, you got me. Regardless, I think it's unlikely that we'll see any Woody Allen movies from Criterion, since they're all out already. Only the late-90's films have crappy releases ("Everyone Says I Love You", "Mighty Aphrodite", etc.), so I guess anything's possible.

the Annie Hall transfer is horrible, it is in desperate need of a re-ish, and the 30th anniversary is next year so

I didn't find it horrible. In fact I don't really find any of Woody Allen's DVDs to be in horrible condition.

Well, several are non-anamorphic, including the mid-90s Miramaxes (Bullets, Aphrodite, Everyone Says, Celebrity....)

the amount of film scratches in the first five minutes alone of Annie Hall is ridiculous

If Criterion is going to release 'This Sporting Life', why not in a boxset of British New Wave films with 'Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner' and other titles?

...I would be ecstatic if they did....afterall, there were other British film makers than just Powell and Pressburger way back when...
