Re: Twilight Time
Coming from a stage background, I suspect Welles was initially more comfortable suggesting specific lighting effects than, say, determining lens choices or camera composition, so I wouldn't credit him with the overall look of JANE EYRE; that's George Barnes' doing. More so than on most of the films he just acted in, Welles didn't have a lot else going on when shooting EYRE. It wouldn't surprise me if he was on the set that day as producer and suggested that one lighting effect to make the scene even more memorable.

Re: Twilight Time
I admit a morbid curiosity to this one, but there's just no way in hell this book could be adapted in any (at least) half-decent way. $19.95 still might be pushing it to justify satisfying my curiosity.domino harvey wrote:NO NO NO NO

I've said this before but it bears repeating: It is, considering the pedigree of those involved, a good candidate for the worst film ever made. Everything about it is wrong. It's like one of those Highlights For Kids Magazine puzzles where you have to circle the mistakes

If the film were going for cheaper though it would be worth getting just to appreciate the wrongness of it all. It's a film that sort of has to be seen once.

I think at the very least I can guarantee it won't ever get rereleased by another company once Twilight Time's license runs out, so it would probably be worth money to some morbidly curious sucker ten years down the line

Re: Twilight Time
The curious can skip the blu-ray and watch the film the way it was meant to be seen: for free on a site that surrounds it with click-bait like "Child Stars Who Has Grown Up And Turned Into Real Beauties" and "Funny Egg Yolk Trick You'll Be Doing Again And Again."knives wrote:If the film were going for cheaper though it would be worth getting just to appreciate the wrongness of it all. Re: Twilight Time
I've been able to find Pony Soldier, The Sound and the Fury, and Lost Horizon on youtube since yesterday morning to check them out. I don't see myself ever needing to see any of them again. I plan to catch at least six more I've yet to see that are a part of this sale in the next couple days via Amazon Prime streaming for $2-4 rentals. Even if I want to purchase any of them that's still $6-8 below the regular price.

Re: Twilight Time
One of the first two Twilight Time Blus I ever bought (the other was The Big Heat) and I paid full price for it. Is it terrible? Yes. But it has its charms, particularly Max Steiner's sweeping (if not a tad overwrought) score (the main reason, I believe, that Twilight Time even bothered).domino harvey wrote:I've said this before but it bears repeating: It is, considering the pedigree of those involved, a good candidate for the worst film ever made. But having completed my Master's thesis on the source novel, I couldn't resist owning this. Hopefully James Franco learns from its mistakes and improves on his upcoming adaptation (if that's still on).

Watched Désirée and Mindwarp yesterday. Liked them both to a certain extent, but not enough to own. Got four more films to stream this weekend before making my order.

Re: Twilight Time
I always avoid doing this because I very rarely ever want to rewatch a film so soon, even if I loved it. It seems pointless streaming a film to decide whether to buy it on Blu-ray, when I won't play said Blu-ray for a good 2-3 years at least. I'd rather go in blind and just sell the disc on if I really can't see myself revisiting.captveg wrote:Watched Désirée and Mindwarp yesterday. Re: Twilight Time
I really hate blind buying and do it only on very rare occasion. I'd rather spend $3 to find out if it's worth spending another $20. There are many films I can wait on buying the Blu-ray if I've just rented and liked it enough, but saving the $7 (-$10 for discount, +$3 for rental) per title during this sale has me motivated to buy any I like enough right away. I don't mind it sitting on the shelf a year or two if it means I'll have it for the next 20 years when it's long OOP and unavailable.EddieLarkin wrote:I always avoid doing this because I very rarely ever want to rewatch a film so soon, even if I loved it. That being said, there are a few titles I haven't seen that are not available online which I've only sampled and will be taking a flyer on in the sale, namely Swamp Water, Bonjour Tristesse and The Disappearance. That's $60 on three movies I may not even end up liking.

Re: Twilight Time
So, after watching Alamo Bay, Beloved Infidel and The Roots of Heaven, I enjoyed the latter enough to purchase, while the other two were worth seeing once. I got about 35 minutes into The Rains of Ranchipur before shutting it off due to excessive boredom.
So, in the end I ordered The Roots of Heaven, the three blind buys I mentioned previously, and also grabbed the DVD of Woman Obsessed as a blind buy since it is not available via Amazon Prime rental like the other three remaining DVDs on sale (which, even if I end up liking, I can wait out for a potential BD release).
Also grabbed a copy of Sleepless in Seattle for my Dad's birthday in a couple months. One of his favorite movies for some reason and he still has it only on VHS.

Re: Twilight Time
I know it's more than likely the result of the source materials, but my biggest problem with the release was definitely the audio. There are portions in the middle of the film where it sounds like the boom mic was on top of the actors, and then suddenly isn't, and then is again. It's overall a great release, but there are honestly times where I couldn't hear the dialogue.
On the up side, I was really happy with the colors. Definitely seemed full and rich where they should.
