regarding The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, actually this title is to be released on blu-ray in July via Japanese studio Happinet, along with two other Demy titles, Les Demoiselles de Rochefort and Peau d'Âne.

When I go to twitter.com/criterioncast, it does this weird thing where it keeps adding #! to the address and then taking it away and I can't see anything. Is this happening for anyone else?

Yes, Ryan has now posted four trailers through Twitter, including the film mentioned directly above.

Sorry to continue with my Twitter ignorance, but when I go to his page, I only see older messages and the "minutes ago" on those messages don't change even if I refresh the page ten minutes later. Do I need to have a Twitter account or something to get the live updates?

P.S. What are the four trailers?

wow ! that's great news !

do you know studio Happinet- I mean, do they release some good blu-ray in terms of picture quality ?
In France we already have Les demoiselles de Rochefort which is great (released by Arte), but I have never heard of a restauration of Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (the DVD quality of the latest Arte release was just above average)

I don't own any of their releases. A search on blu-ray.com gave me this. I heard the Night of the Living Dead blu-ray is pretty solid though.

Now I'm going to be so disappointed if Umbrellas of Cherbourg isn't announced after reading the last 20 posts in this thread. Easily one of my favorite films.

Me too. Didn't realize it was a possibility, but now I'm intrigued. I imagine Ryan's "guess" is based on something. Doesn't look like it's going to be this month, but perhaps it's in the works.

I hope so too. Like you said, Ryan's guess (even though it won't be this month's announcement) has brought this up as a future C release when no one thought they had a Demy waiting. Very cool.

Yeah, just knowing it's possibly coming up, even if not in July, is simply awesome news. I was actually thinking of asking about it in this thread a week or two back because I saw that the DVD was OOP.

What you're seeing is a hashbang. It's basically this trick that web developers use to help format URIs. It's fairly technical, and I don't fully understand it myself, but here's a decent article about it. Twitter's been using them ever since they switched over to "New Twitter." Every now and then, there's a bug and it'll keep you from loading a page for a while. Close the page (or tab) and try reloading it in a new one.

In Unix circles, they're actually called shebangs, which, uh, I guess is why they changed it.

No question about Solondz, anyway, he's showed up as one of the blanked out directors.

Would be a great lineup, but also deviating from Criterion's recent string of seven releases a month. Maybe Ryan omitted a few, as he initially said he wanted people to be surprised, or maybe Criterion figures Melville, Cocteau and Ray'll be enough... which they are.

It's not looking good for Umbrellas of Cherbourg today. But who knows, maybe Criterion will surprise us all.
