Nice with more Bergman on Blu, but i wouldn't call any of them (maybe with the exception of Sawdust and Tinsel) one of his classics? Who owns the rights to the movies Tartan released on DVD now?

Well, Tartan released Sawdust and Tinsel individually and Dreams was in their Bergman box set. So it seems AE have them.

I'm guessing the real classics will be released individually.

Well, isn't this interesting! I'd long thought that Palisades Tartan still held the Bergman titles as they appear to be still in-print on DVD. Does AE just have the Blu-Ray rights? Only some of his films or his entire oeuvre? I can't wait to see...

Wonderful - So Close To Life/Brink Of Life is I think one of the more underrated Bergman films, and makes for an especially fine double bill with Bo Widerberg's 1963 film about a new mother The Pram/Barnvargnen! I had never thought that it would be on Blu before some of his more celebrated work though!

I'm a bit Worried about the absence of any saying that would imply a "Vol. 2".

Although I'm glad it contains 3 of the 5 films available on dvd that I still need to watch from Bergman... I Might buy it even though I already have Dreams and Sawdust...

Glad to see some Bergman heading to Blu in the UK. The Tartan situation confuses me though. I know BFI picked up the Ozu rights when they went bust, yet all of their Bergman DVDs appear to remain in print.

Fantastic, Mizoguchi and Bergman boxsets are nice surprises.

I still can't find any reviews of their Ivan the Terrible release. Has anyone picked it up?

Artifical Eye has obviously done some restoration work if Brink of Life merits a Blu-ray: the existing discs are hideous tape dubs of bad prints with the edges lopped off! That said, none of these films are very good, much less "masterpieces"

Yup, I got it afew weeks ago, seems to be a pretty good release, i've not seen the old dvds so i can't really compare.

Has anyone stumbled across any reviews for Come & See? I have the old "Nouveaux" dvd, I'd like to see if AE have improved the PQ.

I've only seen Dersu Uzala of their latest Russian batch - and it's a definite improvement on the earlier one (although still far from perfect: it badly needs a proper photochemical restoration).

I'm guessing their other discs were also Ruscico-sourced, so it might be worth seeing if any of the other titles have been revisited since their original releases a decade or so ago.

No, but I'm told that Volume 3 has gone back two weeks to 27 February. The Dust of Time came out as a standalone DVD release this week.

Artificial Eye have confirmed on their Facebook page that the version on the DVD is the only one they've got access to - the recall was to fix a couple of authoring errors elsewhere, not to replace the film.

I received my Moviemail catalogue through today which confirms Amazon's listing of Imamura's The Eel as being the shorter 117 minute cut of the film (I haven't seen any mention of extras yet, so perhaps deleted scenes will be included). For the longer cut (134 minutes), the Madman release is a pretty decent alternative. I'll probably still pick up the AE at some point, regardless, but it's a shame that they've let another shorter cut of a film get through the cracks. I was hoping with the long delay that this may have found its way on to Blu or that AE were grappling for the release of both cuts.

Madman's site lists their cut of The Eel at 117 minutes. Incidentally, how drastic are the cuts from the longer cut to the 117 minute cut?

Strangely the madman DVD artwork lists 146 minutes which I assume is probably the unconverted NTSC runtime, but it definitely runs 134 minutes 26 seconds. I just double checked on my DVD. I've not seen the shorter version of the film so I don't know how dramatic the cuts are, though the variation in length has me intrigued as it's a fairly significant difference. I'll pick up the AE at some point.

Hey, I noticed that my DVD of Mirror is actually the older one with the messed up audio track instead of the original mono track. I tried emailing Artifical Eye at the 'home entertainment' email address (done through their website, than copied and pasted from their website), but it apparently is no longer valid. Does anyone have an alternate email address that works? Also, do they still do exchanges?
