CriterionCast just posted this to their Tumblr and claimed it was "temporary artwork"...

No idea where they're getting this but this is some truly hideous work... Hopefully just bad fanart?

Holy shit. Is it supposed to be so goddamn blurry? Some swimminghorses-level work.

The dual-format sticker doesn't look right to me, so I think it's a temp. Or at least I hope so.

It was in the press release that Criterion sent out.

Also, Vengeance is Mine is getting a new cover stated on the Vengeance is Mine page.

Here are alternates posted on The Cast tumblr.

I'm really looking forward to this one once the 90s project begins. It may well be my first viewing.

Sorry, I should have linked to Skillman's initial post from 2007 for those images (I was on the bus!), so I think the "new cover" that is being referred to is just the original cover.

I think "new" just means "original", as in it's not ripped from poster artwork or a pre-existing work. A "new cover" was just commissioned by Criterion for the new release.

Temporary or not, I hope somebody saves this so we can shake our heads in disbelief in perpetuity. However bad the final cover art ends up being, we now know it could have been worse.

Come to think of it, how did whatever battery hen designed that resist sticking a couple of giant heads in the sky?

I love the bottom still--that's all you need! The blur, the top still, and the lens flare are all garish and unnecessary. Still, I don't think we should worry too much, because the more I look at this, the rougher and more "work-in-progress" it seems. (Come to think of it, the reason it's delayed is probably that the Criterion folks are having the same conversation we are!)

My gift to you.

I figured only one of these people ended up moderately famous, and we didn't have much room for heads up there, along with the car and the mountains and that stuff.
So I just went with Bernal, the guaranteed seller. Reminiscing about the road trip that changed his life. Forever.

The Tie Me Up cover art is one of the best ever. I nice interpretation of the U.S. release poster as if re-imagined by Joan Miro (utterly appropriate)! However, the Umbrellas of Cherbourg is a travesty. How does such a colorful movie get art that is a bland concoction of piss and Pepto-Bismol?

I hope the delay means they've gone with something more aesthetically pleasing, like this theme:

The best variation on that theme came in Eddie Murphy's The Nutty Professor 2. Unfortunately, it was not used as the poster.

At least the Austin Powers one is a direct parody of the origination of that design (For Your Eyes Only).

Looks like Criterion was listening! Thankfully they fixed the one thing everyone was complaining about: title placement.

And they made the title placement worse! A+ all around, Criterion!

I stand corrected--they also added more lens flare.

I'm not a fan of the final design, but I can see why people already hate it.

In any case, Nessim Higson is the guy you want to yell at.
