I just expected something to draw in more casuals is all. Great set of titles, but I figured there would be something more popular for the sale.

See the dedicated thread for testimonials. It's one of the greatest films ever made and it never even had a DVD release in the United States. It came out at a time when black cinema began to be defined by different approaches than what Burnett offered and it's been criminally overlooked for the entirety of its existence. This is a release that will finally right a great wrong, and it's fine if you think no film could possibly merit this degree of hyperbole, because it does anyways

Considering the elaborate digipak of the DVD, there's no reason to think the Blu-Ray won't be similarly packaged

Not by Criterion, but Flicker Alley used a 4-disc variant for their Masterworks of Avant-Garde Cinema. That Burnett cover is a real test of the it could come in a paper bag phrase. It makes the film look like a bad Arrow slasher pic. Still, one of the best films ever gets released so I should hold me complaints.

The painter, Charly Palmer, is well-known as a vocal advocate for "Black Art" as a conscious concept (which I was coincidentally just reading about), and his work embodies that. This cover is wholly within his style and approach, and a smart choice for Criterion's release

The more I look at these, the more I like how simply and cleanly La vérité adapts and improves on the original poster — which I just happened to see and be intrigued by a few times in college, without ever actually having seen the film — by focusing on the (obviously) most striking element.

Also, unfortunately many talk about the bizarre, uncanny resemblance of the rendered character to OJ Simpson (with a big knife)! Most likely the cover will go through a revision.
