For a month with only two discrete new releases, it's pretty spectacular- I think I'm buying everything across the board, with the possible exception of Le Cage aux folles. Plus, for once, two of the three blu upgrades are things I don't already have! Celebration time!

I'm the opposite, won't be buying anything in September. My wallet will be grateful.

Been waiting for an anamorphic copy of the best Bergman for years. Those close-ups in HD will be heartbreaking! \:D/

The Blu upgrade of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold doesn't surprise me at all. I say this because CC Blu-ray has been listed in its company credits on IMDB since early 2012. Granted, IMDB isn't always right but they were correct about this one and Certified Copy. Every so often you can find a scoop.

Not as though it wasn't to be expected, but the wealth of extras on the Rossellini/Bergman set is truly remarkable. I'm a little disappointed that Fear isn't included; it's not exactly a high masterpiece on par with the other three, but I like it a lot and think it achieves quite a bit within the parameters of its singularly bizarre, moody suspense setup. It deserves some attention. All in all though, certainly seems to be a release of the year contender.

Also looking forward to the Bergman and Ritt blu upgrades. Great month!

The Spy Who Came in from the Cold is also the 2nd post-blu dvd-only release to get upgraded (after The Last Days of Disco).

Thrilled to see the R-B films.. Blu upgrades aside, Rivette seems like the only major gap left in the collection's European cinema offerings..

He may be the biggest, but certainly not the only one even when left to the AAA majors.

Criterion has been rumored to have been working on The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover for years now. We'll see if it ever pans out. I certainly hope that it does since it'll undoubtedly be in my top five when the 80s list roles along in the new year.

What's wrong with the Swedish release of Prospero's Books from 2010? I was going to pre-order this (as well as Baby of Macon) for a DVD Beaver review, but had to quit when it became obvious that my dissertation work required my full attention.

I have that particular Nordic release of Prospero's Books, and if my memory doesn't fail me, I think it's cropped. Then, of course, it's only on DVD, since the company (Atlantic Film) scrapped their original plans to release it on Blu-ray.

It does, however, have one of the most amusing blurbs at the back: "Nelinkertaisesti Oscar-palkitun Peter Greenawayn elokuva", which translates to "A film by four-time Academy Award winner Peter Greenaway". My guesses: Best Animated Feature for A Walk Through H: The Reincarnation of an Ornithologist, Best Live Action Short Film for The Falls and Best Leading Actor for Rembrandt's J'Accuse...!.

Yes, the Nordic release is heavily cropped, so much so that PG's careful geometrical compositions (especially in the frame within the frame moments, of which there are many) all look completely wrong now. Has anyone seen the Australian dvd by an chance? Is that one better perhaps?

Thanks for the information. The world of cinema fell off of the face of the world for me during a couple of years there, and I hadn't heard about any of these issues before.

Well, this should be easy enough.

Criterion has covered a lot of European bases, but I can immediately think of another five gaps as gaping as that left by Rivette: Herzog, Kluge, Angelopoulos, Demy and Jansco. Thankfully, other companies have stepped up with the first four (and to a lesser degree with the fifth).

When you get outside Criterion's 50s to 70s comfort zone, the omissions proliferate: Stiller, Murnau, Gance from the silent era; Sokhurov, Almodovar and Haneke among contemporaries (though I personally wouldn't rank the last two with any of the aforementioned, they're probably the biggest European arthouse 'brands' of this century).

And once you get down to the essential filmmakers of the next tier, where do you stop?: Ruiz, Skolimowski, Eustache, Epstein. . .

And this is only Europe, mind you.
