Wasn't there some kind of rumor about Damage coming from Criterion too?

Zazie is being released in the UK this month, as part of the Malle boxed set.

I just got the Malle Volume 1. Three of the 4 films in the box were of great interest to me. (The 4th, "Elevator to the Gallows" has been issued by Criterion). Quality is perfectly acceptable if not spectacular. Some people may object to the unremovable subtitles, but since I do not speak French, I would see these films with subtitles any way. For those who have never seen "Zazie", it is a neurotically delightful film. Recommended.

Good news, but I'd rather get some of his other films not on R1 or was released on DVD as of yet, such as Le fou follet, Les amants, May Fools or any of his documentaries first before we see Damage or My Dinner with Andre.

My Dinner With Andre is one of my favorite films and I have been anticipating a proper R1 release like none other

I was being objective.

This and Vanya were both pulled by Sony, so my BOTH could be coming to Criterion.

So what does that mean for Phantom of India? I've been absolutely dying to see that one after recently viewing another one of Malle's older masterpieces, the FIRE WITHIN.

Saw a nice print of Zazie dans le metro recently--this would also seem to be a possibility. An absolutely zany, over-the-top ride.

What is the status of Malle's The Silent World. Has anyone seen this with Janus logo? I would love for Criterion to put this out.

The Silent World (Malle, Cousteu)

It is owned by Cousteau Group. They have previously licensed titles to Warner.

Also a completely maddening movie. When, after actually attempting to harpoon a whale, the crew of the Callypso massacre quite a number of sharks with clubs and hooks for eating the baby whale that the Callypso ran over, I... Well, I dunno what.

Don't forget that in order to find the species of fish in a certain area they detonate large amounts of TNT and collect the dead chared remains.

Indeed. I also liked when they broke for lunch while sitting on tortoises. All about the love of nature, these guys....

Interesting news from Telluride Film Festival:

1) At an all-staff meeting, festival codirector Tom Luddy, discussing the festival's Gremillon retrospective (curated by Jean Pierre Gorin), said that two of the films they were playing were planned Criterion Collection releases - I'd guess Remorques and Lumiere d'ete, though I'd love to see the visually stunning Maldone with a new score (instead of the horrible headache-inducing crescendos currently attached).

2) Later in the festival, Gorin himself revealed that two of his films, including Poto and Cabengo, are in development for releases by Criterion.

Im amazed - I though it was flawlessly put together, not least for Grem's own accordeon pieces. (And what taste to use the Nuages rather than the ubitquitous l'Apres midi d'un Faune, for instance for the almost supernatural opening.)

I noted that the score was based on original notes, and indeed, during the marvelous extended accordion/dance sequence, I was overwhelmed by how well the image and sound fit, but there are times throughout that Arte restoration where the score seems so poorly fit to the image.

I have to believe Remorques is a strong candidate, if nothing else because the cast lends it a pall of recognizability many of Gremillon's other works might lack. Lumiere d'ete seems almost incontrovertibly one of the selections.

Rah rah! Note that Remorques has been on the Forthcoming Criterion list for years now. I don't know the original evidence for this, however. Lumiere d'Ete is a delirious film, but I don't know why this would be Criterion's first choice. ANY Grem is cause for celebration, though. I'd love to see one or other of these supplemented by some of Gremillon's well-regarded later shorts.

Frankly, news of Poto and Cabengo getting a release is nearly as exciting. It's a simply amazing documentary, and I find Gorin's solo work much more interesting than his Godard tag-team stuff. If there are two films in the pipeline, My Crasy Life seems like the other major contender, though Routine Pleasures is sweet in a Les Blank sort of a way. And here's hoping JPG can contribute a commentary for one or both (or for the Gremillons) - I've found him one of the most insightful contributors on recent Criterion discs. He was so good on Renoir with Boudu I'd love to hear how he locates Gremillon in that same constellation.
