The fact that it's called the "wacky thin red lion" tips it off slightly.

Man, is there some kind of "quote function" malfunction going around lately? I hope I don't get it.

Go to their Facebook page. That's probably the easiest. You probably don't even need an account.

Apparently I'm also immune to the "quote function" bug going around the forum lately. Whew!

Have any of you guys seen Okamoto's "Red Lion"? It's not his best, but it's still a pretty fine film itself. I would still love for Criterion to one day release Okamoto's "The Human Bullet", but being an ATG title, it'll never happen.

John Huston's "The Red Badge Of Courage" perhaps? I believe it's owned by Warner now, so maybe no...

I don't know why there's any other speculation going on. It's about the most obvious clue they've ever given, sans the ones where they've told us flat out.

You can see that list and every other list at the Criterion website.

Sorry, Peacock, but can you not access Criterion's website? All of their Director Top Ten Lists are posted on their website under the Explore section. The directors are listed at the bottom of the page in alphabetical order. The newsletters don't provide the lists... just an image that links to the lists.

We're making too many assumptions. There is only ONE lion and it is OUTside. Case closed.

On the right track.
That appears to be 'Scar' from The Lion King. So...
The Red Scar of Courage (1915)
on blu to boot. Nice...I think.

Most likely a double clue involving both "Thin Red Line" and "Red Desert." Since Antonioni's film has won the 1964 Golden Lion, the conflation of red and lion seems appropriate.

I think the red lion is a comment on MGM being close to filling for bankruptcy
