eerik, that ad is marketing the WalMart / rental artwork. The illustrated artwork will be more readily available at most major retailers and online.

Certainly was 1.33:1 theatrically. Here's a little interview done by the San Francisco Bay Guardian in which Kelly Reichardt discusses it.

San Francisco Bay Guardian: I mean, you even used the old Hollywood aspect ratio of 1.33:1 on Meek's Cutoff! And it doesn’t come off kitschy; in fact, it feels even futuristic.

Kelly Reichardt: It’s funny that you mention the aspect ratio. If anything is kitschy, and when you read back about the period, widescreen was what was kitschy. It was a gimmick! It’s what 3D or IMAX is to us today. What did Fritz Lang say, “Widescreens are for funerals and snakes.”

It’s funny now that this memory of widescreen is so embraced but it’s such a diminished landscape in a way. That question is always being asked to me in some tone of like, “When you accidentally picked the wrong aspect ratio did you have to just keep going with it?” (laughs) Though I knew going into it that it would limit the amount of theatres we can play Meek's at. Sadly, very few theaters have the capabilities.

Yeah, I posted about this after seeing it at the NYFF. Worked great and afterwards she talked a bit about why she used that aspect ratio.

FWIW, I've seen the trailer in "widescreen" - probably cropped that way so that it can be projected in more theaters to market the film.

Screw her, I'm zoomin' it on my HDTV.

It's not just 1.33, it's really obviously and pointedly (defiantly?) 1.33. I don't see how the film would work visually in a wider (actually narrower) ratio.

I was kidding ... but you know a ton of people are going to do that (or stretch it!) on purpose or in ignorance. I wonder if she (and/or Oscilloscope) really turned down bookings from venues that couldn't accomodate 1.33? Pretty cool if they were willing to lose money over aspect ratio fidelity.

The ratio suits the film, so good on them if they did.

On the Nicholas Ray centennial site, I went ahead and contacted Susan Ray after noticing that they are releasing We Can't Go Home Again on DVD, I was curious if it was going to be self-distributed online and if there was the possibilities of a Blu-Ray release too. Well, I give my most sincere congratulations to Oscilloscope Pictures after she responded to my e-mail!

Do many of you have a subscription for Oscilloscope movies and if so, have you found it was worth it?

I haven't renewed, but it was worth it though there were a lot I just sold off.

Saw We Can't Go Home Again two nights ago at NYFF and it met my extremely high expectations. What an amazing film! Hoping for a blu-ray, though I think it's also a film where the difference from blu-ray to DVD may be negligible. Who knew Nicholas Ray interacted with Ken Jacobs and Nam-June Paik?!
