Enthusiasm is an amazing presentation, matching the original print with Peter Kubelka's painstaking resynchronization of it and offering Kublelka's completely absorbing extended explanation of / defence of every editing decision he made along the way. One of the all-time great OCD film geek extras.
(I just checked to see if I was remembering correctly, and yes, Kubelka's blow-by-blow editing explanation is as long as the feature he edited.)

Yes, "Entuziasm" is a must have, too. I liked your review, Anthony, and found this observation interesting:
The second reason for not failing to take Entuziazm objectively comes down to its roots as propaganda. The message is so proudly proclaimed, and so overwhelmingly, that only those with an accommodating ideology would be able to fully immerse themselves with the events onscreen. The rest of us are forced to permanently keep a step or two back, yet as such we’re never allowed to view Entuziazm as the complete experience it could have become
I would say the same about both " The sixth part of the world" and "The Eleventh Year", but for some reason I have no problem to immerse myself into what is going on and also the propaganda message, although I don't necessarily have the accomodating ideology you're talking about. It's Vertov's forceful filmmaking and editing that draws me in, the 'musical' quality of the films. Like "A man with a camera", for me these are much rather 'utopian' films than plain 'communist' ones.

I would have to watch
Entuziazm again to see if I agree with myself five years later. Indeed, when the Filmmuseum asked me to cover
The Sixth Part... and
The Eleventh Year earlier this year my stance had changed somewhat. Watching those films I found myself reminded of Humphrey Jennings and how WWII propaganda really saw him come into his own as a filmmaker. The propagandist concerns become an enabler for Vertov and his cinematic methods, not a hindrance. The full review, if you care to read it, can be found
here.
(And apologies for sending this thread further off-topic. Perhaps it would be better suited in either the Vertov or the Edition Filmmuseum thread.)

When did this yearly thread become a general list posting thread...where any list about anything in particular was fair game?

Maybe because more people here now care about the quality of a release being the overriding factor rather than just whether it has had a C slapped on the front or not?
Maybe it's just me but surely this forum has a lot wider scope than just being a celebration of Criterion-only releases.

Pay attention. I'm talking about this particular thread, not this Forum. So, yes, when it comes to this thread, it's just you.

Pay attention. I'm talking about this particular thread, not this Forum. So, yes, when it comes to this thread, it's just you.
Why the rudeness, sarcasm and limitations (from you and others)?
Look back over
this particular thread and you'll notice that since early on Page 3 most/many posters are including Best non-Criterion Release as a voting category.
Member of the Year vote recipient Swo started it, other longtime posters followed, and I believe it was done that way in prior years as well. It's useful related list-making.
So it's perfectly reasonable for someone to list their favorite 2010 dvd releases here, even if they don't have a CC list to add.
It seems we need a new thread for the Best 2010 non-CC Releases, which I contemplated starting a couple weeks back, except I don't have a good handle on what was released when.
Or maybe I've misinterpreted things and some are just making a late play for recognition.

And for the record, that was a pretty great sandwiches list.

Mods, why not make a second thread for "Other Awards Votes" and just move the off-topic posts there as they happen?

I don't think it's "perfectly reasonable" to post a list of favorite 2010 releases that is composed of all MOC Pialat releases, all BFI COI releases, etc. More work was put into the sandwich list than that (and, I happened to like the sandwich list).
