I've seen it. It's standard Oscar bait. Patel's character is indeed the protagonist, but he is portrayed by a six-year-old for nearly half of the film.

I have never seen anyone so excited about Jimmy Kimmel. Thought I may never see something like that.

I have no particular problem with Kimmel, I just found the juxtaposition of that announcement and your reaction very funny. He's fine. I still think the Oscars are at their best when the host has a little bit of a bite, so I'll certainly take his muzzled snout over someone without any teeth at all.

And I still think that "going into people's houses" to scold them about how they're fat and worthless and shouldn't goof on our precious celebs bit one of the most horrifyingly tone-deaf things I've ever seen during an Oscar broadcast. Hopefully he can tone down the sanctimony this time around.

He is bar-nothing the best host I can imagine for the program (his post-Oscar shows are consistently livelier and funnier than the ceremony it follows by a factor of ten at least) and would be my number one pick in any year. There's an interesting article linked in the above that suggests that ABC wanted to put Kimmel in place for a while but held off in preference to the Academy's picks but now they're flexing their muscles a bit since they've basically saved the dying program for a couple years and have the leverage. Good, let them go fully fascistic and install him as host for life.

Interesting to see how Kris Tapley sees the Best Actress race shaping up. This would mean a snub for both Ruth Negga and Amy Adams (these are in order of likelihood that the nomination happens, he has Negga and Adams at 6 and 7):

1. Emma Stone ("La La Land")
2. Natalie Portman ("Jackie")
3. Annette Bening ("20th Century Women")
4. Meryl Streep ("Florence Foster Jenkins")
5. Isabelle Huppert ("Elle")

He's also got Hacksaw Ridge slotted for a Best Picture nomination, and Gibson at 6th most likely to get a Director nom - that prophecy seems to be coming true.

I think pundits have Loving over-performing in their predix, it wouldn't surprise me if Negga got shut out. I sincerely doubt Streep happens though-- I know betting against a Streep nom is usually foolish, but this is an incredibly strong year for this category and I don't think this forgotten film has any legs

It even underperformed at our very blue-haired local arthouse theater despite my remarking to LQ that it seemed like the sort of film that would play to packed houses there for 3 months. I think it was gone in a week or two. (For an example of the sorts of folks who go there, the recent Ron Howard Beatles [strike]redundancy[/strike] documentary was extended for an additional several weeks of matinees "by popular member demand")

Paramount has gone to the effort of re-releasing the film in select markets this past Friday to try and drum up support for a Streep nomination.
