Will Criterion release Tati's Traffic?

Well, I think the speculation is mostly just based on a poster for the film that was spotted in a Vanity Fair photo of the Criterion Collection staff. I don't think they have ever confirmed that they will release the film.

Traffic was released on VHS by Home Vision which did at one time have a relationship with Criterion so chances are good that Criterion might release it since they have release everything else by Tati....

DVD MOVIE CENTRAL review:
Video ****

This new anamorphic transfer from Criterion is one of the best I've ever seen…Tati's 70 mm vision has come to life in full digital glory. The colors, textures and details are all incredibly sharp…every frame is filled with information, and nothing gets lost or muddled in the mix. This was a visual delight from start to finish. This is what DVD is all about, friends.

DVD Central seems to be getting early reviews of lots of these movies. It seems that their review of Seven Samurai was simply a cut and paste with an addendum about the new video quality. Same goes with Brazil. Smells fishy. Wouldn't surprise me if they're just hedging their bets that Playtime will be good, so they can claim to have the first review in the meantime, as another poster noted on the Seven Samurai thread. I'll wait for DVD Beaver's review.

So... no reviews yet, outside of the one from DVD Movie Central?

Hoping for a DVDBeaver Comparison soon...

I am also looking at DVD BEAVER for their review of Playtime...take 2. Lets hope they get it right this time around.

dvdtalk.com has a review of Playtime. They have a screencaps, which is proof enough for me. They also do a few comparisions, but I'll still wait for the DVD Beaver. All in all, it looks pretty darn good!

Disc 1 also has a selected scene commentary by film historian Philip Kemp. It covers eight segments and runs about 46 minutes. When you select it, the DVD is self-editing, moving from commentary scene to commentary scene, cutting out the in-between.
This is exactly what they should be doing more of in the future (and I can think of numerous commentaries that would have benefitted from this approach). All killer, no filler.

I think this might be more of a carry over from the BFI disc than any conscious change of policy by Criterion. I haven't got the BFI Playtime (been waiting for the Criterion!), but the Philip Kemp commentary on the BFI Yojimbo is similarly only over selected scenes. There's no cutting out of the bits he isn't talking over on that disc (one of BFI's earliest) though.

It sounds like the digipack packaging will be the only drawback for me on this release. I was hoping for a double amaray case. Oh well. :?

Kemp's commentary on the BFI runs through the whole movie, and as I recall, is pretty engaging throughout...certainly not bad enough to warrant a hatchet job. Might be a legal thing.

And a digipack would make for a rather unweildy boxed set (assuming that remains a possibility).

They don't have the new review on the main page, but I poked around, and discovered the updated page through another list! Looks pretty darn good!

Can anyone that has seen the restoration in theater confirm that the blueish tint shown in the caps at the beaver is like you recollect? It sure looks sharp but it's quite different from the BFI and the previous edition. I doubt they would mess this up, just wondering.

Yes, in theater (seen at the AFI) it looked just like the new Criterion release.

The BFI print in the cinema looked like that, with the cool blue sheen.

It does, but I'm a bit concerned by the first of the comparison shots, with Tati by what appears to be a men's room. The new Criterion appears to have heavy edge enhancement on this shot. Look at the rim of his hat!

I don't know how these screenshots were created, but I look forward to more opinions on the image...

That's not Tati, but it certainly looks like edge enhancement. Let's hope it's not. Anyone got their copy and ready to share impressions of the moving image?

It would really be a shame, cus otherwise this looks like a marvelous transfer.

Yeah doesn't look nice. If that's edge enhancement, then I wonder who's fiddling with the EE knob at Criterion. The first capture at the Beav comparison of Spirit of the Beehive looks terrible.

I also wonder how did the folks at Tativille come up with Playtime's greenish/yellowish -tint. I have the French edition and it's quite similar to the BFI and Scandinavian discs.

For someone who isn't sure what "edge enhancement" is...what is it? Why is it bad?
