The Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley is going to be playing a print in mid-February (link) and tickets are still available. It'll be my first time seeing it but I'm glad to know it won't be my only chance to see it in the near future. Hopefully it's a sign of more Tarr restorations to come.

This looked fantastic when I saw it last weekend (for the first time) in Portland. It's been so popular in New York that Film at Lincoln center is bringing it back in December.

Looks like this is playing at the MFA in Boston on Dec 21. How did the print look?

Oh nice. Thanks for the heads up. It looks like they have a second showing on Dec 22 as well.

It was a DCP, but the restoration serves the film well.

Has anyone been to the Alfond Auditorium at the MFA to see a film before? Just curious what it's like given this is a 7.5 hour film. Feel free to PM me.

It's a fine space, with typical museum-auditorium seating (don't expect recliners, cup-holders, or a ton of leg-room). Sitting there for 7.5 hours might be a challenge, but sitting for 7.5 hours is a challenge anywhere, and since this probably won't be coming soon to a multiplex near you (us) these are probably the best conditions under which we'll get to see Satantango screened theatrically.

A picture of Alfond is here if that helps.

Thanks ianthemovie! I already bought a ticket but wanted to know what to expect. This won't be the longest film I've seen in general, but the longest I've watched in a theater so I wanted to prep myself.

But BluRay is delayed.....

@ArbelosFilms (Twitter)
SÁTÁNTANGÓ BLU-RAY UPDATE: Our Special Edition Blu-ray is now officially scheduled for release on November 10th, 2020. We’ll be releasing two editions: a very limited edition collector’s set available exclusively through our site, and a 2-disc standard edition. (1/3)

At first I thought it was delayed again but this news was discussed in the Arbelos / Cinelicious thread:

Just got my Blu-Ray from Amazon UK. Not quite sure what's up -- there are two black bars on either side of the image. There is a white line running along the extreme edge of the image on either side. I don't have the technical vocabulary for it. I've tried to adjust the aspect ratio on my TV, but it seems to be correct, set at 16:9, or at least it's the only way it looks right when I scroll through the available options. The aspect ratio specified on the blu-ray box is 1.66:1.

Oddly, when I put in my old Curzon DVD, the image fills the entire screen from side to side, and that doesn't look right either. Are there any reviews out there yet?

The correct aspect ratio is 1.66:1 so there should be slight black bars on either side of the image. I don't know about the white line though

I don't have any screenshots, but compared to the old AE DVDs, the image is significantly cropped at both sides and very slightly opened up at the top. The DVDs are ca. 1.69:1, the Blu is 1.59:1. I didn't notice a white line when doing a quick check.

Thanks for the words. The white line is very very thin, just barely there and just noticeable enough to be, well, noticeable. I checked the image compared to the old Curzon DVDs, and the DVDs look rather unnaturally stretched in comparison with the Blu Ray.

I watched first 10 minutes, and there is no white line. Why should there be one. This is the Arbelos new 4K restoration. The film even started with the Arbelos logo. Also, if AE can borrow this print and release the BD, how come Arbelos can't release their own restoration? Why is it delayed till Nov,2020?

It’s entirely up to Arbelos when they choose to release their own restoration in the US, and an ultra-niche title like this clearly needs very careful handling, especially in the current climate and bearing in mind that Arbelos is also handling theatrical distribution in a way that Artificial Eye isn’t.

Personally, I’m happy to wait.

(The fact that the Arbelos release is being encoded by David Mackenzie is a pretty strong incentive for me.)

As well as wanting to give it a theatrical run, Arbelos have said that they're having difficulties producing extras due to the ongoing situation with COVID-19, hence the delay.

Screenshots are now up on caps-a-holic and it looks like the AE DVDs were showing too much picture in the frame since it had even the round corners of the frames showing.

Whenever I read on this thread about the Blu-ray being "delayed" I get confused. Did Arbelos ever say it would come out before November?

I'm not sure if there was ever an exact date, but in a press release Arbelos mentions it being delayed until November as they had planned to have it out sooner. I much prefer it be delayed so they can put out a great release. I find some of the impatience with these releases to be kind of funny especially during a global pandemic.

I seem to recall their first PR directly gave this delayed November release date, and while they wantes to release it sooner, no precise announcement had been made yet.

If I remember rightly, the official position for ages was just "2020".
