OK, fire away.
FYI, I'll be away for the weekend, w/o access to the Internet, but feel free to drop me a PM about anything regarding the Czechoslovak cinema - I'll get back to you on Monday.
Cheers!

(P.S. Is it true you come from Hungary? If so, I'm searching for
this edition of Pálfi's Hukkle. Do you know an English-friendly e-shop I could use by any chance? Thanks!)

To the best of my knowledge Hukkle with the DTS track is out of print. "nem rendelhető" means cannot be ordered. I think they'll rerelease it when Taxodermy comes out. I'll keep you posted.

Acclaimed Polish director A. Zulawski's (Possession) difficult to track down On the Silver Globe is set to be released 08/28 by Facets. Not the best distrib by any stretch of the imagination but...a must own title.

Located a stash of the Hukkle dvds in Budapest. Are you interested in one? Let me know.

Thanks in advance for considering my request.

The very interesting Yamamoto Musashi film
Robinson's Garden (1987) is coming out from FACETS on Sept. 25th. Here's what FACETS' site has to say:
Independent filmmaker Masashi Yamamota, known for his edgy dramas that capture the restless spirit of Japanese youth, appropriates the The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe and transplants it to present-day Tokyo. The story begins when Kumi discovers mysterious ruins on the outskirts of the city. Now overgrown, the haunting atmosphere of "the garden" draws her in, consuming her with its beauty, color, and fantasy. Just like Crusoe on his deserted island, Kumi is lost and isolated in Robinson's Garden. Shot by Tom DiCillo, director of Living in Oblivion and Jim Jarmusch's frequent cinematographer. "Robinson's Garden is a true original...funny, unpredictable, quixotic magic" (Nigel Andrews, Financial Times). In Japanese with English subtitles.

I'm actually looking forward to seeing whether or not my VHS of SUSANA is better or worse.

you don't have $40 for the Phillips all-region player from Target but you have the $50 or more the Facets is going to run you once it comes out?

Which model is this (these days)?
When an adequate multi-region DVD player is no more expensive than a couple of DVDs, ITS price is pretty insignificant.
On the other hand -- having the entire world's DVD output tempting you can result in lots of extra spending.

Tarr is personally overseeing the transfer of SATANTANGO himself and is very slow and meticulous. The Facets DVDs will most likely be worth the wait.

Tarr supposedly oversaw the other Facets releases of his films too....

And didn't he also oversee the PAL versions of Sátántangó, which came out in 2006? What's so complicated about an NTSC transfer that it should take several months longer?
(To be fair to Facets, their releases aren't invariably shit - the Sokurov DVDs were so good that you'd never guess the distributor. Then again, they weren't in-house productions, which probably helped)

They probably walked Tarr around their offices and showed him segments from their other releases and he went "Oh, Americans like for their films to look like complete shit. Get to work, Facets!"

Except, of course, for Almanac of Fall... which may just be a fluke.

That's such a gorgeous film to begin with though, I mean, you really have to try to fuck that up. Haliburton couldn't even fuck that one up.
