Tell me about it - I sold my R2 expecting it to be included in one of the boxes. It's one of his most underrated films, though I feel that it has too many daylight scenes, thus isn't as atmospheric as his earlier films. The R2 (which has an atrocious cover) also featured, Mario Bava: Maestro of the Macabre, a decent 1-hour from 2000 that probably won't be included in box 2.

I agree. Hatchet for the Honeymoon seems to have had a direct and immediate influence on the horror genre of the era in films like Deep Red, Halloween, and Maniac.

From the box art posted, it appears that Kidnapped will be included in volume two.

I want Hatchet for the Honeymoon and I want it NOW.

Also, this set better include Rabid Dogs or I'm probably skipping this volume.

Anchor Bay UK's DVD actually has a decent transfer, certainly better than the Image DVD.

Happily, the UK is now getting the first volume as a straight PAL port. Yippee!

The good news is that, if it's like the existing AB single DVD release, Kidnapped will include the original Rabid Dogs.

The bad news is that I already own the existing AB "Kidnapped AKA Rabid Dogs".

And the good news is that I've yet to buy it! ;) Shame about that god-awful, barf-inducing artwork.

At least the two boxes will match in equal grossness.

Probably not, that will be the way they manage to upset both people who bought the stand alone disc and don't need Kidnapped again and those who will just get the boxset but want to see Rabid Dogs! I wouldn't be surprised if the Tim Lucas commentary and featurette for that film is dropped from the boxset to provide added incentive to pick up the stand alone disc.

Does anyone know the status of Blood and Black Lace and The Whip and the Body? Are they still owned exclusively by VCI?

Tim Lucas received the specs from Anchor Bay/Starz and confirmed on his blog that the set includes both Rabid Dogs and Kidnapped. It also has the same featurette (End of the Road: Making Rabid Dogs and Kidnapped) and commentary as the standalone disc.

It a shame we have rights issues, I mean two fucking Mario Bava boxsets which will never have the full cream of him...not even the Maestro of the Macabre documentary.

The Whip and the Body
Planet of the Vampires
Schlock
Hatchet for a Honeymoon
Blood and Black Lace

Thanks, a friend of mine called me today to tell me from the Fangoria article too. So, this is it? No more Bava sets?

Why can't MGM re-issue Planet of the Vampires?

The German DVD still is available. And very good.

You can also get the Italian DVD, which is in my opinion the best one available. It's the only release that presents the original version with Italian soundtrack and English subtitles. It's also a better transfer than the MGM disc.

I posted screen caps from the Italian disc last year. Can't remember where (space vampires have been eating away at my brain).

Absolutely! The Italian disc has eye-popping colors, and the original Italian dub makes it a more engrossing experience. I can't go back to the MGM disc anymore. My only complaint is the timing of the subtitles, but you get used to it. (I picked it up from Xploited Cinema, BTW.)

The German edition of THE WHIP AND THE BODY also makes the VCI edition irrelevant.

Daliah Lavi wrote:Hopefully Tim's blog will divulge that Bay of Blood has been suitably restored at least audibly, the coming days are Nirvana for this Bava admirer.
I'll post this here, but Daliah Lavi's prayers might be answered by a post by Lucas at the Mobius forum:
A preview for my friends at Mobius: Based on the audio spot checks I made, the BAY audio has been considerably improved. Depending on your home audio set-up, I suppose it's possible that you might hear some very muted imperfections if you listen hard, but most of it sounds very clean. Its only in the wake of very loud noises, like bird cries or fuzz guitar stings, that I can hear the slightest afterburn of that noisy distortion that you couldn't help but hear all over the Image track. So while still not perfect, it's remarkably less distracting and more listenable. And the transfer looks dee-wish-us.

Indeed. I acquired it recently and really enjoyed it. $16.60 from Amazon.DE.

The AB site says that the complete run time is 191 minutes. Are some of these titles shorts or something?

The 191 minutes comes from the combined running times of Rabid Dogs and Kidnapped.

So is the first box set already oop? I've had mine on backorder from Deepdiscount for a few weeks already. If it's indeed oop, it's strange that it's still available for order there.
