I actually picked up the even more ridiculous but not as hilarious poster for the third Kirk Cameron film long ago from a video store going out of business. Unfortunately, I lost it during some move in college.


The books (particularly some short-lived YA series) had a brief flurry of popularity in my middle school/high school around the turn of the century (millenialism in action!). At one point, we watched the first movie along with The Omega Code in some Catholic Teen group and talked about Protestant vs. Catholic views of the end times. There was not much content to that discussion.

Just to return to Left Behind for a moment, cracked.com takes a look at the forthcoming shitstorm and paints a credible picture than is worse than I even realized. Of particular interest is the reference to one of the subsequent installments where The Prince of Peace engages in horrific acts of ethnic cleansing.

I don't care how much this makes. Whoever greenlit it should not have a job anymore.

God's Not Dead (Harold Cronk, 2014)

Not really sure where to put this, but I am having trouble understanding this promo's logic-- is the proof of God that we all woke up today?

Because God created the sun which wakes us up each morning? Only I'm already up by then, trying to think of better places to bury the bodies.

If God didn't forget to wake me up this morning, then why did I oversleep? Thanks a lot. GOD!

Reminds me of one of my favorite Onion headlines (or should that be subheadline?)

That's why I don't review movies anymore, but only give a grade, and then have the text focused on the A/V presentation.

When I write a QC report I don't review the movie. And the likes of Beaver and Blu-ray.com are essentially in the QC reporting business.

This part makes me wonder if I should hate-watch God's Not Dead:

Christian Josh Wheaton (Shane Harper) is warned against enrolling in a philosophy class taught by a known atheist named Radisson (Kevin Sorbo). Unwilling to change his schedule to enroll in a class with a less hostile professor, he takes his chances and, minutes after the first class begins, comes to understand the warning. Radisson insists every student write and sign a simple proclamation -- "God is dead" -- and skip over the teachings of physicists and philosophers who, through their studies, have deemed it so.

Good grief. Philosophy professors just don't do things like this. It would be contradictory to their training and the very essence of their field. This sounds like a kind of cinematic Chick tract.

Also, at least based on my experiences in philosophy classes, the religious students, when discussing justification for their belief, tended to subscribe to fideism (according to which faith is opposed to reason and logic), so they wouldn't be in a position of trying to provide logical proof of God's existence. Sounds like the screenwriters knew extremely little about their subject.

Well, that's why the film only gets 4.5/5.

I kind of want to see this as it sounds like those wonderful/awful movies that used to air on TBN at 3AM when I was in college that were all about the Rapture or briefly going to Hell. Maybe for the Religion Project. I guess not every recent Christian movie can be as relevant and fully-fleshed as Blue Like Jazz, but that's probably why it stood out so much

It's almost literally based on an email forward- like, that's only one of several subplots in the movie, each of which is likewise some bizarro version of how the world works that would only make sense in green comic sans.

Heh, yeah it's about as plausible as the old "socialist grading" e-mail chestnut.

A July 2009 version altered the second and third lines of the item to:
That class had insisted that Obama's socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.
The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan".

The polite student easily tears his arguments to pieces using the familiar arsenal of creationist nonsense and obfuscation. Great reading. Love the picture of an ape with the inscription "Our Father."

As an atheist professor of philosophy I hope to someday be as cool as this Professor Radisson character. In all seriousness though, I can assure you that my colleagues and I had quite a few chuckles about this one when it came out.

Thank god the clear cut, white student is there to show us the light.
