I guess you could buy a bunch of these to replace the casing for every single title that you buy. But of course, then there would still be the "Contains one Blu-ray and two DVDs" on the back of the case to complain about!

But since the 3 disc case is thicker, the artwork probably won't fit properly in those cases; it'll be compressed & wrinkle.

Only 2mm thicker, so there may not be an issue. Or invest in a good paper trimmer. Or accept reality, which costs nothing.

But reality doesn't look good on our shelves. So I guess we're back to square one.

Quick question: Were the discs originally packaged with the second DVD on the left and the BD and first DVD on the right, or did you switch it up for the photos?

It doesn't bother me. When the booklet is tucked in with the case it's looks fine. With Zatoichi I it looks OK because the DVD's were accessible by unfolding each page. With blu-rays only there's no need to unfold each page.

That's how they were packaged.

I personally would have preferred a hinged leaf in the middle for the extra discs, but this is ok. Not like that DVD under the book will be getting much attention from me anyway.

the new case is definitely preferable to the digipacks. I just got Ace in the Hole, the packaging is large for what would have been a single bluray release, but I've been selling off parts of my film collection, so instead of having only six inches of available shelf space left I now have eighteen, so the massive width increase of DF digipacks doesn't seem quite so alarming anymore.

Also it's nice to see a return to robust plastic instead of the reliance on dull cardboard.

I'm just glad that digipaks will be reserved for special occasions again, rather than every other release. I like digipaks every once in a while, but this year there have been WAY too many.

Ace in the Hole though has a really nice texture and look to it in digipak form. I'm less pleased with the flimsier seeming Breaking the Waves.

This is basically my feelings on it. I don't mind the occasional digipak that stands out as "special/unique" but nearly every release being a digipak makes them less appealing, and the thicker nature of the new digipaks don't help in that regard.

I agree. I wonder if Criterion will offer replacement packaging for any of the dozen or so 3-disc digipak releases that have come out since November. Though this time they'd have to provide smaller booklets along with them as well, since the digipak booklets are too big to fit inside a plastic case.

And they'd redo the booklets just to please annoyed customers who don't like the look of digipacks?

I don't think they'll offer replacement packaging, but they might do what they did with Night of the Hunter and re-release the titles in a plastic case after the digipak versions sell out.

That`s a dissapointment, the Sirk release being a plastic case...

If that happens, then they should also offer digipak replacements for the people like me that doesn't like the dull plastic cases (that I have experiences with being damaged upon delivery as well). Only fair right?

Maybe they should just do away with cases altogether.

Clearly the way to make everyone happy and save resources at the same time is: Dual-Case-Format releases. A digipak set and a plastic cased version together, inside a large steelbook.

I like digipaks, but agree that they should be used for special occasions ... I want to be the swing vote on the board that decides what covers deserve that royal treatment!

Yes, digipaks are royal treatments, not everybody understands this. That's why some people like all the releases in digipaks, and some don't like them at all. There is nobody to blame for it. I love digipaks, but I am glad for this plastic case. I do anticipate several occasional digipaks in future definitely.
