I stopped following baseball years ago, but perhaps the most memorable time I ever had following it was when the White Sox finally won the World Series after 88 years, the longest American League draught in history (longer than even the Red Sox who had won it the year after the White Sox had last earned a title). It was truly a team effort rather than a team dominated by any particular superstar - pretty much everyone was important, including their third closer Bobby Jenks, who just passed away from stomach cancer. Jenks started the year in the minor leagues and ended it closing the final deciding game. His teammates kind of seen him as a kid then, albeit a really big kid. He's gone way too soon at age 44.

Callously, the first thing that came to mind is that it will probably make it easier now for those same Verhoeven films to be released.

I just watched Spetters for the first time last week and was hoping that the needle would move sometime in the near future in relation to Verhoueven's Dutch films. Welp!

Jost Vacano is in his 90’s now, and the last member of Verhoeven’s core group of pre-Hollywood collaborators. I really hope he can supervise some new restorations

Um… Paul Verhoeven is still very much with us, and surely he should have the final word?

I assume they meant Rob Houwer's estate being pliable...which presumably still retains the rights to Verhoeven's Dutch films after his death.

That is sad to hear. Mulloy's work is/was brilliant. I was first exposed to them on late-night Channel 4, back when the station would frequently air odd, challenging shorts. I think it was Intolerance II: The Invasion, which I watched first, then subsequently brought the BFI dvd, Extreme Animation (which I highly recommend!). His short, Sex Life of a Chair, is simultaneously hilarious and weirdly disturbing.

Which was the Mulloy animation where the figures tore each other's heads off and swapped them? I remember that traumatising me on catching it late at night.

I never realised that he was Jesus on the Mount in the opening of Monty Python's Life of Brian! ("Speak up!"), and turns up as the "First Fanatic" in Gilliam's Jabberwocky. Very different from his role in the Star Wars films!

I see from imdb that he also appears in Performance, is in the recently released by the BFI Slade In Flame, and is the titular killer in Aki Kaurismaki's I Hired A Contract Killer (spoiler) with Jean-Pierre Leaud and Margi Clark!

Love Phil Mulloy: a true wild man of animation. I don't know if he'd want to rest in peace, so I hope he rests in a crazed fever dream of his choosing.
