Surprised that Kino is not behind the restoration of Northern Lights, as they now distribute all of Nilsson’s films

Interesting comment on the BFI restoration of Hitchcock´s Blackmail:
"runs much too quickly, making the actors’ movements throughout seem almost comical. Both silent and sound versions appear to be around 7,660 feet in length, so I have no idea why the restoration is so fast; it actually equates to running at 28fps, rather than the BFI’s stated 24fps."

Best news I heard in a while! Two of the most significant early Weimar silents which had been curiously neglected all these years, and which are only floating around in truly abysmal copies at the moment. Ideal stuff for MoC to lay their hands on, if they still care for such things.

What a bizarre comment. It just assumes that both the silent and the sound versions must be of equal length, rather than being distinct cuts of the film with different runtimes. Where did he see it projected at 28fps, and how would it even be possible on modern technology without noticable frame interpolation artifacts?

From the wording, I get the impression that the writer didn´t see it projected at 28 fps; he just did some maths and found that the running time is = 28 fps. Calculation probably wrong. I´m no techie so cannot comment on the frame interpolation factor.

Update:

I posted the above framerate question in a new thread on HTF and got this response:

"I think someone made a typo since several sources seem indicate the silent version runs 6740 ft (almost exactly 75 min). Just checked the Kino Blu-ray and silent runs 76 minutes including the restoration intro/outro. It's definitely encoded at 24fps and I'm not sure how they'd fit 28fps within a 24fps container without obvious frame dropping issues.

Sound version runs just under 86 minutes, which matches the 7600 ft. figure."

They used to come from Leonine, formerly Universum Film, in Germany on a regular basis but that sadly is no longer the case as they probably don’t sell as much. They’ve effectively stopped at the beginning of COVID and the last releases were box-set repacks of the most popular titles, such as a Nibelungen set or a few actor-themed ones.

The 2020 restoration (French release on Blu by Pathé) of the domestic French version, has the original score by Edmond Lavagne, Georges van Parys, and Philippe Parès, arranged and orchestrated by Günter A. Buchwald.

The 1994 restoration by Cinémathèque Francaise, of the foreign version, has the original score, by Lavagne, van Parys, and Parès, orchestrated by Mario Dalpane, and intertitles co-written by Jean-Claude Carrière. It was broadcast on Arte in 1997, and can be found as an extra on an old French DVD of Cet obscur objet du désir, according to Paul Cuff at The Realm of Silence.

The two restorations are not identical (discussed in Open Edition and Realm of Silence texts).

I hope at some point he does Tang Shu-shuen's The Arch, which Blank edited and eventually became part of his rights portfolio. I'm grateful it's at least available (Frederick Wiseman could take a cue there), but it's in very rough shape.
