They've changed the Marienbad cover slightly, the text is much more readable and clearly embossed.

Since the Blu-ray sticker is on this cover I think it's safe to assume this will be the front.

Maybe the cover will come more and more into focus as release date approaches. Or maybe they'll tweak it ever so slightly back and forth. ("I could have sworn that the font was slightly different last week.")
Count me as one who likes, if not necessarily loves, the cover. Then again, I was on board with Breathless from day one (& liked it even more when I saw the full package).
I was also a fan of the pink Viridiana, which I realizes calls my taste into question.

I think the Marienbad cover is a bit reminiscent of the Teshigahara box set cover. Yes, the thumbprint is a bit more creative than the cover Criterion has put out for Marienbad, but the simplicity of the Teshigahara cover suit the release very well.
Also, I found it interesting that the thumbprint used on the cover of the Teshigahara box set was taken from the opening credits of Pitfall, which appears to be the same technique Criterion is using for their Marienbad release.

My first thought at seeing the
Last Year cover was -- whoa, is this the
IBM version of
Marienbad? The font looks like a modified variant of
City. A very unusual choice.
tavernier wrote:They could wrap a Marienbad BluRay in a grocery bag and I'd still buy it.
Have to agree, I'm so excited at the prospect of a blu-ray
Marienbad I could care less what they stick it in.

Let it
begin.
You would think if Paramount could do the
cool envelope thing for
Zodiac, Criterion could at least try to do something other than slap the poster on the cover. But I guess Brad Pitt's face will move more units. Also, is this the first time in Criterion's history that the actor's names have been on the cover and not the director?

That has to be temporary.

Silence of the Lambs, for one, but I'm sure there are a few more.

That's likely some contractual thing where stars demand a certain type of billing.

It could be worse, hope it's temporary though.

So now I'm the person who comes in and says they like a cover everyone hates? So be it: I like it

I do too, though I wish they'd put Fincher's name on it.

Just curious Domino, what exactly
is it you like about the cover?

If they were going to use one of the poster images, they should have stuck with
just Brad's face (though I'm sure Cate would have something to say about that). The backwards text was also a really nice touch on the poster, and that's lost here. But still, probably temporary.

It's a shame Criterion didn't announce this with the rest of the June releases. It would have been such a crazy surprise had someone refreshed the site and seen this in "Coming Soon".

That is also my preferred cover. More unique then the poster they chose.

This is my biggest disappointment with the Curious Case of Criterion's BUTTON release. It'd all be worth it if that could have happened.

I think the cover's fine, and would also like to think that it is a sly nod toward Criterion's practice of cutting faces in half on many of their covers!

I like it well enough; its classy and discreet. Certainly won't be sitting pretty on my shelf, though.

It's nice enough. The single DVD will probably be the usual stuff next to it.
Well, one thing is sure, Criterion entertained me for a few days here and I felt my life had some kind of purpose. Can't wait next month!

Probably the one off contrary opinion aspect.
Anyway, I agree with Matt, Brad Pitt should be the sole actor on the cover because I actually liked the poster. As for the release itself, well I suppose it'll pay some bills.
Can't wait for that Juno boxset by the way.
