What lovely packaging, though. My stars.

Wow. That Rules of the Game package is piss awful. The booklet cover the same as the cover art, bland black text on a white background on the reverse, no artwork on the inside sleeve and the yellow disc (why??). Three Colors is okay I guess.

I think RULES is not bad, the spine & cover looks classy, and they've opted for a minimalistic interior, with no photos visible etc, and the artwork is growing on me... This title seems to be the jewel in the crown of the collection, so Criterion is always trying for something that will stand out (as with the original blue plastic sleeve DVD package, never replicated on any other release)...

Yeah, looking at that package you'd never guess that it's "the jewel in the crown of the collection."

It won't discourage me from buying it or anything but it's disappointing.

Rules of the Game is very classy. Love it.

It seems they often don't even bother to attempt to correlate the inside cover and the disc with the front and back nowadays - only when it's a digipak. Pity as they've had some fantastic total packages in the past.

Could they make the Three Colors Trilogy look any more boring? Geez. I'd even prefer the poster art in this case. Is Binoche or Jacob that difficult to do adequate justice for this artwork?

Odd that they switched George Voskovec and Robert Webber on the 12 Angry Men cover. The original design (still on the website) shows the men in order by juror number, but the actual package now has Juror 12 before Juror 11.

Wow, weird indeed. Maybe we could get an answer from Criterion on this? That is going to bug the hell out of me.

Saw these today at Barnes and Noble: DVD editions of The Double Life of Veronique and Night of the Hunter repackaged in clear plastic cases. Veronique's specs listed the pared-down booklet included with the blu; the same store's only copy of Hunter on blu was in the original cardboard packaging.

Unless I'm mistaken the NotH DVD hasn't ever been a digipak.

Jesus, if that cover doesn't warn you off of Tiny Furniture, you deserve what you get.

Really good covers this month except for Tiny Furniture but then no one was going to lose sleep over the film anyway.

Yeah, I'm upset about the lack of features on Three Outlaw Samurai, but that cover is fucking gorgeous. I love World on a Wire, too, I'm glad they kept that poster design.

I'm not sure how I feel about Anatomy of a Murder's cover, though.

edit: Haha, apparently neither are Criterion

And now it appears than rather go with the classic art (which was the cover of the original soundtrack LP) for Anatomy of a Murder, they're going to screw it up with their own unique touch.
