The "subtitles" thing drives me up the wall when people use it as a criticism against a film. I understand the "I don't like subtitles so I don't watch foreign films" frame of mind, but it irks me when someone uses the "that movie sucked because it had subtitles." "Well excuse them for speaking in their own language and not yours. Ass."

And Slumdog Millionaire is spoken almost entirely in English, which makes the "subtitles! yuck!" comment 10x more absurd.

Five utterly ridiculous short films (averaging from 10-20 mins long) selected by director Kelly Reichardt from her colleagues at Bard College. Not to sound harsh (or like I have no sense of culture), but these guys are trying way too hard to be all “avant guard” and “artsy”. There’s nothing to see here.

Part of this review reminds me of the Extras episode with Patrick Stewart:

Now, the bonus, Sonatine. Is a boring movie. Not that I'm not use to the Kubrick style (long movie, few almost none dialog). Is that the movie is pointless. This guy who is a yakuza, wants to retire. And if you like mafia movies, you know that is a mistake. The movies moves slow. The only 2 redeeming quality is that it keeps you expecting more, and when they shoot some in the head they show it all, blood and everything. And for those breast lovers, there is a scene for you.

His comment on one of the films is "IS 80% LOYAL TO THE BOOK, THE OTHER 20% IS WHAT SCREW THE MOVIE." I'll let you see for yourself which of the four masterworks that pertains to.

Based on that alone it's obvious she's an idiot since every guest I've ever seen on a talk show (of any kind) is to PROMOTE WHATEVER THEY'VE JUST DONE (movie, book, TV, etc.) Or does she think that it's a coincidence when they show up on a show and they just happen to have something coming out?

i would've used another word instead of crap, but i don't think IMDb would allow it... i agree with LOTS of the previous commentators... including the one that said(and i was REALLY surprised that someone else mentioned this, much less THOUGHT of it...) it reminded them of the movie 'the Rapture'. if you've missed that one, you have my sympathies. one of the best original stories i've ever been lucky enough to partake of... i agree that the lead role's acting was excellent. i agree that it was very realistic in a lot of ways. i agree that it didn't pull punches. but what am i really left with? i've seen THOUsands of movies, literally. it's not as if my story telling vocabulary is limited to happily ever after endings, middles OR beginnings... i love a VERY wide range of movies/ways of telling stories cinematically... this movie had soooo little payoff for me that i felt the need to write this... and it's not as if i haven't seen slow movies...i LOVE 'stranger than paradise'...and i could name gods know how many more 'off beat' films... and two and a half hours? for WHAT? yes...i felt like i was there...i guess i don't 'go there' for the same reason i won't see something like 'cyborg soldier' or 'hellraiser 6'...no reason for me to... i don't feel enriched or transformed or entertained... but i AM glad my vlc player has a fast forward... consider yourselves informed.

Georgia L. Jenkins gives two stars for not knowing what type of book she was getting:

A person coming from a Christian point of view, and interested in study of the "last days" can be very fooled by this title. I was, and so was partially handicapped relative. Intended to return it, but misplaced address. May read as connections could be of interest.

Maybe the misplaced address was caught up in the rapture? O:)

A bit overrated, but the acting was very good. The story was offensive, though, as a woman has no business being a preacher, and Lancaster's character was a phoney. Nonetheless, good film.

Of all the offensive things you could think of they chose that one. I suppose that Night of the Hunter is on their hit list, too. Oh, geez, and The Devils! The portrayal of priests in that one is pretty bad, too. These movies showing women as preachers (or bad priests in general) gotta be cracked down on.
