Ok got it. Sorry I missed that it was on the Facebook page.

I guess my friend at Criterion's point is that there hasn't been a delay, while it took longer than they expected, there hasn't technically been a delay because they didn't announce a release date. Anyway, it's going to be announced Jan 15th or Feb 15th. And the Blu Ray is coming first. the SD disc won't come out until after.

If true, they must have liked how that worked out for Howards End.

i recently read on IMDB that one of the great controversial films of its time Victim with Dirk Bogarde is OOP because Criterion is giving it a proper release? can anyone confirm this?

Walkabout Blu
That would be a list I`d be very happy with. By Brakhage Vol. 2 is indeed coming out on dvd as well as on blu-ray
Isn`t Walkabout coming on dvd also?

Criterion has always had the rights to Victim. They released it in the collection on laserdisc but dumped it on the Home Vision label for dvd. While certainly possible, I can't think of any other Home Vision title getting rereleased in a Criterion edition years later, so it seems unlikely to me.

I wouldn't exactly call it a "dump," Ian...after all it is a digital transfer that looks quite good, much better than some Eclipse transfers, I'd say. Aside from a Dirk Bogarde interview and a trailer, it was skimpy on the extras side.

On the other hand, I don't hold much hope for Image (with its own fiancial issues) to keep many of those HVE releases in print. Don't you think its reasonably possible Criterion may revisit some of those HVE releases?

They would be fools not to release their HVE Zatoichi films. In a spiffy box set no less. Even Hanzo the Razor, would be great a Criterion release. It's far from a world classic, but that "penis strengthening" ritual in the first film, is positively one of the funniest things I've ever watched. Ever.

Some of the used copies of Victim are selling on amazong from 40$ all the way up to 250$

if i'm going to be paying 40 bucks i'd rather just wait a year or so and see if i hear anything about the possibility of it being released again [-o<

It is coming out on SD DVD but apparently not until after the BluRay.

Looks like by Brakhage II is still very much in the works. Wouldn't expect it next month.

It's seriously good news that Phil Solomon is in talks with The Criterion Collection, because when I spoke to him via e-mail, he was still unsure about how to distribute his films on Blu-ray.

Where's numbers 507-511? I just noticed that they're missing when I checked to see the new titles.

Bigger Than Life is 507 and the Costas are 508-511.

This belongs in the Fugitive Kind thread, but since that doesn't exist yet, I'll put my random speculation here. I guess this release means we've still got another Maysles Brothers release on the way (Eclipse perhaps?), or another Brando title, since Meet Marlon Brando is absent.

RE: Blu-ray whiners

I'm all for getting as many titles on Blu as possible, but I'm also a realist. If DVD is "old news" for someone, tough. If they feel Criterion should release everything on Blu, then I personally recommend they donate the $$$ to make it happen.

Threads are up for the new announcements:

512 Vivre sa vie
513 Summer Hours
514 Ride With the Devil
515 The Fugitive Kind

Essential Art House: Kapò

Thank you, Criterion, for putting them up before we even got a single "where are the April releases?" post.

No kidding. That's gotta be a first. I wonder if the Monday holiday (MLK) had anything to do with the early announcement?

I believe this actually marks the third month in a row that they've made announcements in the AM on a day that was no later than the 15th.

Disappointed with the lack of an Eclipse set or a catalog upgrade on blu-ray. They could announce a Bergman title instead of Ride with the Devil. :(

You're right! They could....

I feel they are just biding their time. Making potential customers pissed and releasing shitty Ang Lee films is a great way to build a buzz.

I would love to see a Phil Solomon criterion bluray, it would be the greatest criterion release yet.

It seems they started getting them up earlier along with a headline on the main page when the war trilogy was announced.
there's no missing it now.

With this pace in upgrading catalog titles, I think we may never see them in this lifetime. I'd rather had seen that gay cowboy movie released by Ang... :-"
