Looks splendid! I can't wait. I'll be playing it loud too. Shouldn't be a problem with the housemates, I play quite a bit of Call of Duty, so their already used to the war zone.

Anyone notice that the subtitle sample for the crit doesn't have subtitles.

How does anyone feel about the shadows that have lightened a lot in the new transfer? it shows more in the first pair of screenshots here.

Doesn't this change the "feel" of the movie?

This transfer is approved by the director and cinematographer. It's very unlikely that the first DVD was. That's all the information I need.

Owen Roizman hated what Friedkin did to his cinematography on the French Connection Blu, tho'.

Should I have said Apocalypse Now than? Honestly though Malick's too much of a stickler for me to think this is anything but perfect PQ-wise.

A dream came true today, kind of. We have a nice new pristine version of TTRL available in stores (Blu-Ray and Standard). My only complaint (it's not truly even a complaint) is that there are only 14 minutes of outtakes. I would love to have had 30 minutes worth of full deleted scenes. But then I would have wanted 45 minutes...and so on.

Just getting a glimpse of what I had always read about all those years ago is enough for me I think.

If left to his own devices, Malick would have tinkered with TTRL indefinitely. The film that premiered nationwide in early 1999 is indeed the vision he settled on after combing through everything he and John Toll filmed and now we can see it in the best possible quality.

Biggest surprise ... Malick is a Green Day fan. #-o (Maybe his only flaw ...)

Excellent review at Slant though their 4 stars for image and audio makes you wonder just how good the A/V has to be to warrant all five stars, given that everybody else has given the Blu perfect marks.

Their review is for the DVD, not the Blu-ray. The DVD has visible compression artifacts and I suspect that's where they're docking marks. Still, the compression in Criterion's DVD is nowhere near as bad as what's in the Fox DVD.

Their first album has a bit of merit. I hear Martin Scorsese loves Blink 182

Thanks! And, as I'm sure you've figured based on the comments from others, you're in for treat. It's a gorgeous looking film and this Blu-ray presents it perfectly. On a technical level it's one of my favourite discs in my whole collection.

The full marks for this Blu are fully deserved: I've seen the film multiple times (including the theatrical screening) and it looks just stunning in 1080p. The only serious rivals to this are French Cancan and the Crit Red Shoes (as far as colour films go anyhow).

My heart still weeps that the one Malick that doesn't have a gorgeous Blu is also my favorite, poor lil Badlands.
