Well, to promote discussion I've found most people I talk to that are somewhat "into film" love this movie. To clarify, this is a prototypical movie that many people pull out of their repertoire to reveal they "appreciate film." I find it happens with this movie more than others. I also think at the onset this movie really desired a cult status but fell short since it gained popularity with the release of its DVD and DVD players gaining momentum soon after in 1999-2000.

Now my caveats. I do not like (closer to hate) John Goodman (0.25/10) but I love Jeff Bridges (9/10) and Julianne Moore (10/10). I also don't drool over the Coen Brothers and accept all their films as masterpieces. Unfortunately, most of their best work was early in their career. "Fargo" was brilliant. Five of their first 6 movies were excellent. Also, "No Country for Old Men" was very good but the 2nd best movie that year nominated for best picture. "There Will Be Blood" was better by a Irish mile and one of my favorite US movies of all time. The "Academy" got that one 100% wrong.

Well holy shit, this movie that's looked genuinely bad on home video forever got a 5/5 score on Blu-ray.com for the new 4K transfer

I'm just buying a 4K digital copy - I can't count at this point how many discs of this film I've owned, and it looks like people are selling their digital codes from this release at a pretty low price compared to a new release

I feel like I’m going to end up buying a UHD player in the next couple of years if the major studios keep releasing films like this & Predator without upgrading the BD too. Which is, I’m sure, the plan, those pricks.

You're not talking about John Goodman's entire career output, right? You just hate him in this role, yes? If you answered "yes, i am referring to his entire career" to my first question then it's pistols at dawn as i cannot abide such a slur.

By the 00's I think you clearly started to see a hierarchy in the Coens films I would say, the likes of The Ladtkillers, Intolerable Cruelly, Burn After Reading, etc as works of lesser ambition relative to No Country, True Grit, Inside Llewyn Davis. During the 80's and 90's I think that's less common bar perhaps the Hudsucker Proxy.

Lebowski does I think existing in a similar area to Withnail and I in the UK as a film that's somewhat away from the mainstream but still highly enjoyable and quotable that many people end up loving in their teens and early twenties, I don't think that should really he held against either though.

Sorry, couldn't resist. I'd like to make a really in-depth post about why this is one of my favorite movies of all time, but I just can't. A generic "The characters and the dialogue" will have to suffice; also how certain phrases are simply part of my family vocabulary; again I know that's true for many people and probably one thing that annoys so many who don't care for the movie. Anyway, sometimes you can't explain love--maybe later on. This might be the movie I've rewatched the most in my life, and like mfunk I've owned countless copies of it. Right now I don't have a 4K player, but I am considering buying one mostly for this...the movie I've likely seen the most in my life...that's love.

The cult stature of Lebowski has grown immensely enough that it could be said that it's a cult film that also happens to be really mainstream. It might again be one of my over-assumption of it's popularity among the broader population, as what happen when discussing Blade Runner on this forum, after the BO performance of BR2049. If you move away from a certain demographic like nerds on the internet it became clear that in the public case BR means nothing to them, that could likewise be the same of The Big Lebowski. Never have stepped foot in the UK to know about Withnail and I statue in the native region, does that same assumption apply to that film among the wider intersect of society?

I first watched The Big Lebowski on cable, a year or so after it's release, with my mom and brother and we all loved it. We were actually quoting it for a little while. This was quite a bit before it became a cult thing.
