And because now I can do this,

Top 5 silents

1. The Oyster Princess
2. The Wild Cat
3. So This Is Paris
4. The Doll
5. Romeo and Juliet in the Snow

Top 5 sound

1. To Be or Not To Be
2. Heaven Can Wait
3. Bluebeard’s Eighth Wife
4. Trouble in Paradise
5. Cluny Brown

My top 5 sound… I haven’t seen his silents yet..

1- TROUBLE IN PARADISE (especially after the restoration)
2- THE SHOP AROUND THE CORNER (the best unassuming Christmastime movie)
3- HEAVEN CAN WAIT (the most sentimental of Lubitsch without the worst parts of sentimentality)
5- TO BE OR NOT TO BE (can attacking Nazis with humor be any better than this)
4- CLUNY BROWN (Jennifer Jones at her best)

… and speaking of silents SO THIS IS PARIS is on TCM SEPT 14 12:30 AM.

I'd amend both of those lists today mostly to switch around the order, but especially to include The Student Prince in Old Heidelberg at the top of my silents!

This very confusingly-worded clue appeared on a recent rerun of Jeopardy.

Why not just start out at "This"?

Oh well, es mach(t) nichts.

That's worded very poorly. If I were playing I probably wouldn't have answered despite knowing the answer.

German for "serious" & first name of a physicist & a director of "Trouble In Paradise"

would be better. Has Jeopardy degraded that much? Haven't seen it in a few years.

I missed opportunties to see his silents this past year, so from what I've seen so far:

1. To Be Or Not To Be
2. Design For Living
3. Angel
4. Ninotchka
5. Cluny Brown

Between Criterion releasing Trouble in Paradise and Shop Around the Corner in 4k, as well as upgrading the Lubitsch Musicals Eclipse set to Blu-ray, and Warner Archive releasing The Merry Widow on Blu, it's been an excellent year for Lubitsch on disc. Hopefully we get some action on the silents next...
