Not holding my breath. They'll probably give it to Condon just to fuck with us.

Funniest acceptance speech ever. I was pleasantly surprised that he pulled it off and they didn't try to usher him off with music or cut to commercial. Hah.

Meryl Streep's acceptance speech, which credited her fellow nominees and was a quiet plea for filmgoers to demand smaller films get screening time at their local multiplexes, was very very classy.

For the first time in my life, I now feel like I no longer give any shit about the Oscars or the Independent Spirits.. or any awards. Last night while watching the Golden Globe, I grew more and more impatient that I quit watching an hour later. It was because the night before I watched the miraculous The New World. While that film remained fresh in my mind, the award show was unbearable for me to watch. The fact that the Malick film was criminially neglected last year just did it for me. I can't believe that I've come this far in my life being in denial about the awards, etc. Now no more.

I know how you feel Michael. As soon as the awards show was over, I looked at the pile of laundry in my bedroom and really wished I had spent the night doing that instead. But I'll keep watching, just because I love it when really grateful newcomers win (America Ferrara, Jennifer Hudson). I'm not looking forward to the Oscars, though. A bottle or two of champagne should help.

Have they said who is hosting the Oscars for this year yet? That could be the deciding factor in how bearable it will be!

It was nice to see the clips of Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons winning for Elizabeth I on the news this morning. I was surprised about Emily Blunt and Bill Nighy winning for Gideon's Daughter by Stephen Poliakoff though - I didn't realise it had been so well received in the US. Could the, as David Ehrenstein might put it, DianaGrief subject matter have been a factor in its success at the awards?

Was anyone else surprised at how Sacha Baron Cohen, after all that time doggedly going on talk shows only in his Borat persona prompting much speculation on how he only rarely appears out of character, immediately dropped the act when given an award? Perhaps accepting the award as Borat (and maybe singing his national anthem) might not have been in good taste in the company of people he respected?

I'm praying that Scorsese gets passed up again, just so people will stop giving the Oscars any credibility whatsoever. He should have won 30 years ago...

My perfect nightmare for the friends of mine who I know would go balistic and burn Hollywood down would be Eastwood winning Best Director for Letters from Iwo Jima, with it also taking Best Picture. Mwahahahahahaha!

Marty will take it, and there will be a standing ovation. I just hope Pesci or De Niro don't present. Or is the custom that last year's oscar winning director presents, I forget? That would make it Ang Lee, btw...

Any clips on youtube? I missed the show last night and I want to see Scorsese's and Sasha's speeches...

EDITED: Thank God for youtube. I checked last night, but I guess that was too early.

All 5 films (plus 2 reserve choices) that I predicted are all shortlisted.

Nine films will advance in the voting process in the Foreign Language Film category for the 79th Academy Awards®. Sixty-one films had originally qualified in the category.

The films, listed in alphabetical order by country, are:

Algeria, “Days of Glory,â€

Yeah, pretty predictable lot of films. Final five nominees will be:

Pan's Labyrinth (predicted winner)
The Lives of Others
Volver
Water
Black Book

How come Letters from Iwo Jima won best won best foreign film at the Golden Globes but was not nominated in this category for the Oscars?

For the Oscars but not the Golden Globes, it has to be financed/produced (?) primarily in the country that is submitting it, the spoken language of the film doesn't enter into it. Iwo Jima is a 100% American film. I think there's a post on this very board about the trouble getting Pan's Labyrinth accepted for the category

I thought that Eastwood got Japanese money to make Letters... I'm probably wrong, however.

Japan didn't submit it. They submitted HULA GIRLS.

I pretty much think these nominations are dead-on - maybe Vitus or Indigenes instead of Water, but I know that in order to vote in this category, you have to see all five features, and I know that the average Academy voter, choosing between a graphically violent fantasy about fascism and a straightforward thriller with vaguely religious overtones, will go with the latter. I still call this category for The Lives of Others to play the spoiler.

The Globes and Oscars have very different sets of rules for the foreign language category (among others). Here, once again, are the Academy's rules for foreign submissions. Each country get to submit one film for consideration. As you can see, even if Japan had wanted to submit Letters, they'd probably have a hard time convincing the Academy that Clint is Japanese.
1. The film must be first released in the country submitting the film no earlier than October 1, 2005 and no later than September 30, 2006, and be first publicly exhibited by means of 35mm or 70mm film for a run of at least seven consecutive days in a commercial motion picture theater for the profit of the producer and exhibitor, advertised and exploited during the run in a manner considered normal and customary to the industry. The picture need not have been released in the United States.

2. The recording of the original dialogue track as well as the completed film must be predominantly in a language or languages other than English. Accurate English subtitles are required.

3. The submitting country must certify that creative talent of that country exercised artistic control of the film.

4. The Academy will make the final determination in all questions of eligibility.
