But I wanted to chime in if there has been any news on the mk2 FWWM. I know its been delayed over and over, and I think they eventually rereleased their bare-bones, but what exactly occured with it? Such a release would be a DVD of the year for me if it would ever take off.

Just an fyi if you need it, but that first Julee Cruise album is great make-out music.

So I just bought the Gold Box set, and it didn't come with any postcards like it's apparently supposed to. Anyone else have the same problem? Can I do anything?

I think the postcards were only included in the first batch of boxsets and were a limited edition incentive for preorders/early buyers.

Coming from someone who had a similar cinematic crush on Fenn, it has been interesting making my way through the series once again and noting how it evoked a certain nostalgia (I was a sophomore at NYU when Twin Peaks rather dramatically changed the rules of the game).

I cannot recall a series that has generated more discussion, print, and notoriety during its run. As for Fenn, that face -- if not her acting abilities -- remains one for the ages.

I'm also glad the writer noted her cameo in Wild at Heart. For an avid Lynch fan who genuinely does not care for that film, it remains the one simultaneously heartfelt and chilling moment amidst all the noise.

P.S. I also suffered through Boxing Helena because of Ms. Fenn. No less that three times, if memory serves.

Thanks for this, Colin. It's great to see a tribute to the marvelous Ms. Fenn. That piece also provided me a proper new avatar, so extra props for that.

Nike appears to be putting out a skateboarding shoe designed after Twin Peaks.

Assuming I read this article correctly, it seems as though both Fire Walk with Me and the deleted scenes from the film will be included with the upcoming Twin Peaks Blu-Ray box set.

There is no four-hour cut of Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me. As I understand it, Lynch was contractually obligated to deliver a film of a certain length, thus the scenes left out of the film were never completed (as in, never locked down in editing, never given a proper soundtrack, etc.). Which is why Lynch has always said that he would need a good deal of "finishing" money to include them on any release. Perhaps that has come through, but I doubt Lynch would re-integrate the scenes into the film.

Frankly, I prefer the shorter and puzzling Fire Walk with Me to what it would have been should it have included everything in the script. It would have made some Twin Peaks fans at the time happy, as it features cameos from nearly every character on the show, but it reads as redundant and burdened down by backstory and exposition, something the version we have decidedly is not.

I don't Lynch would want to restore any four-hour cut even if he was given the time and money. He's stated that the only reason he's softened on releasing these deleted scenes are out of tribute to the actors.

Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me is the perfect distillation of everything that makes the show great, and everything that makes Lynch's films great, thrown together with the deft touch of a master. I'm glad he's not messing with it too.

I think the idea of the film being a "distillation" of the series is a bit off, since Fire Walk with Me is among other things a fairly aggressive "ret-con"/rejection of the series, announced almost immediately with the axe smashing into the television set. The tone of the film feels quite different than the tone of most of the TV series, with the possible exception of portions of a few Lynch-directed episodes in the second season.

The film is about family sexual abuse tout court--something that the TV show never hints at very strongly.

Of course, such a theme would be very unusual (though not unheard of) for prime-time network television. But my sense is that it took a while--the entire course of the show, maybe--for Lynch to really decide what it was all about. The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer, written by Lynch's daughter (psychoanalyze that!), may have helped push him in this direction as it likewise makes Laura's situation much more obviously about family sexual abuse. I can't recall whether it reveals that BOB is her father. Anyone read it more recently than I?

It didn't...because the book was published before the second season reveal of "who killed Laura Palmer".

Ah, that's right. I forgot the sequence of events. Most of the tie-in stuff came in between the two seasons, when ABC had high hopes (quickly dashed) for it being a major success.

The book does strongly hint at the BOB/dad connection IIRC. Though it could also be interpreted as Ben Horne, Laura's godfather.

Currently rewatching TWIN PEAKS via the 2007 DVD issue...and really hope they don't resort to using the standard definition masters for the special effect shots on the Blu-ray edition! Also, they should try for a more accurate synchronization for the 5.1 mix on some of the episodes. Usually Lynch is a stickler for technical accuracy, but the A/V quality is all over the place on this set.

Didn't they do HD remasters for the Gold Box? I think they'll just use the resources from that, how many times is CBS supposed to invest in a complete overhaul and remastering of Twin Peaks? The Gold Box set looks excellent.

I mentioned this earlier in the thread, but for the "Gold Box" edition the 35mm film elements were scanned in HD and re-edited for the majority of the footage. However, for footage that contained slow motion, post-production digital effects or complex montages (multiple images superimposed), the original standard definition masters were used resulting in a noticeable drop in picture quality with prominent interlacing issues. This is somewhat distracting on DVD, but I imagine it would be even more apparent on Blu-ray. So, you're right, the only way to correct this is to recreate the visual effects in HD using the original 35mm elements. I would certainly welcome this. I don't know if some purists would complain, but some of those effects are pretty dodgy looking!

As many times as they try to sell me a new version of the same product!

So they should have never released the widely loved and praised and highly anticipated DVD set to avoid having to sell you a "new version of the same product" when a HD format is introduced? I'm confused at the outrage/entitlement here. No one's making you buy the Blu-ray set.
