I've only seen Summer of Sam, but my favorite anecdote about that came from John Leguizamo when he was promoting it on the talk show circuit. There's a scene where Mira Sorvino slaps him, and apparently she didn't hold back - she really smacked the hell out of his face. And of course they did take after take, and Leguizamo begged Lee to stop because "I can't read my lines anymore! My mouth is completely numb!"

Anyway, he's really good in it, I think it's an underrated performance.

I'm all in on Crooklyn, my fave Spike behind DTRT and Malcolm X.

Are there going to be any new extras? I know Spike Lee did a commentary for the Disney blu-ray of Summer of Sam, but there's not much out there for the rest of them.

we're working on it. we've reached out to Mr. Lee and asked him to record commentaries for all 5 or at the least sit down for an interview discussing all 5 films.

I'll second this. I've cooled a bit over the film after seeing it too many times, but he's something else here.

I'm guessing someone in Universal's licensing department is both an actual cinephile who knows his stuff and an asshole.

There's finally been some excellent Mann releases in the past couple of years (the early noirs, Men in War) but so, so many great films that have yet to appear (The Naked Spur, The Far Country, The Tall Target, Reign of Terror, etc.) and yet for whatever reason so many of his most mediocre flicks are getting BR treatment in the past year.

I'd also love to see The Heroes of Telemark which I caught some of on TV once and thought pretty highly of it.

Bend of the River is not even close to being the worst Mann/Stewart film. Easily the 4th best.

And Thunder Bay is better than Strategic Air Command and the soap opera Glenn Miller Story.

Winchester '73 was licensed to someone else. And most likely The Far Country, which was also not available. Not sure why all this negativity toward 2 classic Mann/Stewart films, we're pretty sure all the completists are psyched about these releases.

Negativity is kind of the name of the game around here. People fall over each other to be the first to shit on something.
